[Research in Chemistry at the U of A] Second Episode: Dr. Christopher Cairo, Research group in Chemical Biology. The Cairo group uses medicinal chemistry, bioconjugate chemistry, and enzymology as our primary tools to study these systems. Applications in cell biology and immunology are being explored with fluorescence microscopy and biophysical methods including single particle tracking (SPT) and fluorescence photobleaching recovery (FPR). Their studies are focused on targets... in human health including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and inflammation. Hi all, UAlBeRTa Feature for September is Alyssa Kopec! She is currently in her 5th year of studies in BEd Secondary with a major in Chemistry and a minor in General Sciences.... Some questions we asked her: Favourite Chemistry Class? Chem 211. I LOVE analytical chemistry, especially 211. I love the practicality of it and the hands-on experience you obtain throughout the course. You get to use many different instruments and chemicals whilst having to practice being both independent and accurate with your techniques. It’s a very great course that prepares you for upper chemistry courses down the road. Plans for the future? To teach high school chemistry and eventually come back to school to obtain a masters degree! Advice for new students? to get to know others around you and have fun! Meeting new people is the best way to make the university the most memorable. 4 years go by so fast so make sure to stop and enjoy every minute of it!

Chemistry Students' Association 23.12.2019

Hi all, Our UAlBeRTa featured person for May is Maya Abou-Ghanem! Here are some of the questions she has answered! What are your goals and where do you see yourself in five years?... My research focuses on the interactions of aerosols with gaseous pollutants. Upon graduation, I plan to work for either government or in academia and continue this type of research in hopes of better understanding the atmospheric processes that have implications on our air quality, health, and climate. What is your favourite chemistry-related course? Definitely the analytical chemistry courses I took in my undergrad. I found them to be very hands-on, which allowed me to develop good skills within the laboratory that been transferable in the working field and in graduate school. What advice can you offer to a student that is about to begin their University career? That it is okay to change your mind. Typically, we enter university at a young age with only one goal in our heads, but a lot of the time we end up discovering other interests along the way. It is okay to explore other interests because you may find something that you are even more passionate about!

Chemistry Students' Association 03.12.2019

Don't forget to vote for your favourite prof! Polls close at the end of this month!!

Chemistry Students' Association 16.11.2019

Hi all, our CSA featured person for April is Megan MacTaggart! Here are some of the questions she has answered! 1. What are your goals and where do you see yourself in five years? ... Hopefully, in 5 years I will have completed a masters degree and be starting doctorate research on medicinal chemistry, with the hopes of becoming a process chemist or maybe a professor! 2. What is your favourite chemistry-related course? My favourite chemistry course of my undergrad was definitely Chem 102, with 241 coming in a close second. 3. What advice can you offer to a student that is about to start their university career? The best advice I can offer to new students is to not be afraid to make new friends. I went into university with the mindset that I didn’t need to make new friends, I was happy with my old ones, but my closest friends now are people who I’ve met here. So find a new lab partner! Sit next to a stranger! If you’re lucky, you’ll meet someone that will be around for the rest of your life!

Couldn't make it to our AGM last month? There was a lot of exciting changes to our constitution that passed! Here is the lowdown of what's changed: 1. There is now an attendance policy to ensure executives attend meetings. 2. We've added a sustainability policy to ensure that the CSA maintains its new sustainable practices. 3. The CSA now has an Equity, Diversity & Inclusion policy. ... You can view all the changes in detail here: https://docs.google.com//1tZaZ6vYPCnCnGZAp8PWxj_m8xU/edit Thank you to Co-President Brody for writing all of them

Chemistry Students' Association 03.09.2019

Hi all, our CSA UAlBeRTa featured person of the month is Abbie Rubletz! Here is a little snippet about her! 1. What are your goals and where do you see yourself in five years? ... My goal is to finish my honours degree in chemistry and to go to grad school and start working towards a Ph.D. 2. What is your favourite chemistry-related course? Without a doubt, my favourite class I’ve ever taken was CHEM 263. Anyone who knows me knows how passionate I am about organic chemistry (I’ve even got a tattoo of benzene on my arm!) so it’s really no surprise that 263 is my favourite. Also, being able to predict the products of common organic reactions is a skill that is not only important for that class, but that is also built upon in a lot of other higher level chemistry classes as well, so it’s super important! 3. What advice can you offer to a student that is about to start their university career? It might seem like your first year is really general, especially if you’re in science, but use that time to find what you really enjoy doing. Your upper year classes get very specific quite quickly, and if you don’t have at least a general understanding of what you enjoy it can get overwhelming very quickly. Also, it’s totally fine if you change your mind about what you want to do at some point. I changed my major three times during my first year and I’m so glad that I did because I love every second of my current program and I can’t imagine doing anything else!

Chemistry Students' Association 01.09.2019

Chemistry Students' Association 31.07.2019

This February, our CSA featured person of the month was William ! We did a little interview with him, hope you enjoy! 1. What are your goals and where do you see yourself in five years?... My goal is to get admitted into the PharmD program at the University of Alberta and graduate as a pharmacist. 2. What is your favourite chemistry-related course? My favourite chemistry-related course is Chemistry 263! It is an extension of the concepts learned in Chemistry 261. Even though it is a challenging course that requires a lot of patience and practice, thinking through the problems and being able to understand the mechanisms of organic chemistry is quite rewarding! 3. What advice can you offer to a student that is about to begin their University career? A piece of advice that I believe would be to follow your passion and do not procrastinate. I think that it is important to ensure that the major you are applying for, is what you are truly passionate about and not something that your parents or friends told you to do. Stay on top of your work, plan everything accordingly, stay healthy. Your hard work will be rewarded!

Chemistry Students' Association 24.07.2019

The CSA is proud to announce that starting February 1st we will be offering naloxone training, free for all students + staff! Naloxone is a drug that blocks the effects of opioids and can be life-saving in the case of an overdose. We noticed the high demand that the Health Centre was experiencing from the student body and decided to take a leadership role so that everyone who wants to be trained can be. As of now, only Co-President P. Brody will be training students but soon a few other executives should be able to offer training sessions as well. We have prepared a quick infographic on the opioid crisis in our community for your reference. Please if you know someone at risk, get trained. You could save their life.
