Video related the the last post. Gas exhaust fumes leaking into the attic from a broken chimney! Could have been deadly!

This was one of the most dangerous situations that we have ever come across! The homeowner at this house noticed a lot of extra moisture in their attic and wasn't sure where it was coming from. Not knowing what was causing the moisture buildup; the homeowner called a roofing company to install extra roof vents to help vent the moisture. It wasn't until the weather dropped below freezing that the steam was visible in the attic. They quickly realized that it was the gas fur...nace exhaust. Two different furnace companies and 1 home inspector later, and still no one could figure out how this was happening. All the while the furnace was left running! Unbelievable! Thankfully the homeowner persisted and called us when they realized that the metal chimney was not sticking up out of the roof as it did on their neighbours houses. What we found was that the prefabricated "b-vent" chimney had broken apart inside the wall and collapsed into the cavity between the joists. Gas exhaust was spilling into the space behind the bedroom wall and into the attic. It's a miracle that the family had no health issues. Carbon monoxide did not leak into the living space. The extra roof vents probably saved their lives! Luckily this brand of chimney (DonPark) is still in production so we were able to reconstruct the chimney above the break-point with brand new & matching parts. We determined that the cause of the chimney break was a missing screw. We had the opportunity to work with Cardinal Carpentry to assess the condition of the fireplace and chimney on one of their current projects. Unfortunately this century old Parkdale home has a shared/conjoined chimney between the fireplace and furnace. The aluminum furnace liner is taking up the chimney space. Not much can be done here to preserve the woodburning aspect without a complete chimney and fireplace overhaul. 100years+ in the past there were no build...ing codes as we know them today... a minimum building standard that homes had to meet, just did not exist. For this specific situation, there are potential solutions with a reduced clearance gas fireplace using a direct side vented model... Effectively bypassing the chimney. Anything is possible if the budget to build it exists! Back to the drawing board with the homeowner! New year, new liner. We installed this stainless steel liner into a 100+ year old chimney for a new woodstove. The masonry chimney was not lined with clay tiles. In order to meet building code requirements for clearance to combustible material the liner had to be insulated with a ceramic wool blanket wrap. A pretty elaborate process... The liner was first wrapped in the blanket, then secured with foil tape, then wrapped in a stainless steel mesh, then wrapped with stainless... steel wire and finally stainless steel clamps. We also insulated the breach pipe for good measure. The stove worked very poorly before the liner install. The big open chimney did not create adequate draw. Now this stove works beautifully. In this instance, the homeowner wanted to save some money so he installed an aluminum liner for his wood burning insert. BIG NO NO! This put his home and family at risk. The squirrel saga continues... We removed a squirrels nest from a gas boiler system in the High Park neighbourhood of Toronto. The chimney was completely plugged and the exhaust could not vent. Luckily the boiler was equipped with a safety shut-off when the flue gasses backed up. As impossible as it sounds, the squirrels found old newspapers dating back to 1939 and used them for nest material.
