Have you been planning to add to your RRSPs and escape 2019s taxes? Better act soon! March 2, 2020 is the deadline to contribute to your RRSP for the 2019 tax year. Not sure how to make a last minute contribution? You can transfer funds from your TFSA or non-registered account.

Knowledge is power....and peace of mind For your 2019 tax returns, You may get your tax refund within 8 days of filing your return, but remember, CRA conducts random audits for the rest of the year. When you file your taxes be sure to keep your proof of Northern Residence handy, keep all receipts for your sole proprietor, have your T2200 ready to send in. This will eliminate your panic when your receive the request for the proof of expenses. This is nothing to panic ab...out, its a simple process if you are prepared Next, remember just because you didnt get a T4, you still need to claim your earnings. Not getting a T4 rarely is the fault of an employer (we face penalties for not filing) you either moved and didnt tell them your new address or you did not fill out your hire package with your accurate address. Expect a reassessment about October because If your filing doesnt match the employers filing, it will be caught and reassessed and on top of it, interest charges are back dated to the filing due date. You need to gain access to your CRA account or sign a T1013 for your tax preparer ASAP. This will grant them access in advance to look at your file and print any missing T4 and file your taxes accurately, the first time.

If I had one financial book to recommend, Dave Ramseys The Total Money Makeover......his method is sound, effective and proven over and over. I love watching this guy on YouTube as well, hilarious presenter His method goes against all advice youve probably ever heard, but it works! I love it, I live it, and its changed my outlook on money and my financial goals are being crushed faster than I thought I ever could

Interesting concept to ponder. Weve all heard it, dismissed it because its our habit, but if you are broke and complaining and still doing any of these daily or weekly........you are not broke Buying a coffee a day = $766/yr (cheap coffee) Starbucks = $2190/yr Breakfast every weekday morning at McDonalds = $1300/yr There are so many places we spend out of convenience, out of habit or out of the unwillingness to change our behaviour. ... If you cannot manage the money you have now, remember, you wont manage your money better if you have more of it. Youll just magnify your habits you have today Choose to create your financial future today by creating healthy spending habits See more

Money Monday During a recent financial course I took, there was an opening paragraph that struck me, and I had to face the fact I was guilty of this mindset for many years. How many of you have said, if only I could make xxx of money a month, Id be stress free/have a savings account? More money will not solve your problems. If you havent managed the money you have now, you wont manage the money if you made xxx that you dream of.... Humbling isnt it? Taking a long hard look at that statement in this course gave me pause to evaluate a few things in my financial plan this year. Interesting yet true. Face it, more money will not solve your problems. The decisions you made brought you here, now you need to make different decisions, to get you where you want to be. I came into this New Year with a set of plans for the first 1/4 of 2020 and I changed a few things around after taking a long hard look at where I want to be after my first 1/4. I am now in the position to reach my goals financially, stay the course, and make steady progress to my December 31 goals.

Money Monday (Tax tips) If you have a box 32 on your T-4; this is the criteria used to calculate your travel benefit. I have many people come to me, thinking they can write off thousands of dollars in travel expenses. All information is available on the CRA site You get the lessor of the cost of a ticket to Edmonton (for our region) or your expenses, or the amount in box 32 on your T-4. You must also have an print out of the flight estimate, for the dates you travelled, ...in the event of a travel audit from CRA. The maximum deduction for travel benefits you can claim for each eligible trip is the lowest of the following 3 amounts: the value of the taxable travel benefit received from your employer the actual amount that you spent on your trip (keep all your receipts and other supporting documents) the lowest return airfare available at the time of the trip between the airport closest to your residence and the nearest designated city to that airport (the nearest designated cities are: Vancouver, BC, Calgary, AB, Edmonton, AB, Saskatoon, SK, Winnipeg, MB, North Bay, ON, Toronto, ON, Ottawa, ON, Montreal, QC, Quebec, QC, Moncton, NB, Halifax, NS, St. John, NL) Travel expenses include air/train/bus fares, vehicle expenses, meals, hotel or motel accommodations, camping fees, and other incidental expenses such as taxis and road/ferry tolls.

In preparation for the upcoming tax season, and to eliminate your scrambling at the beginning of tax season, I have a couple of suggestions for you. Gather RRSP info and what youll be needing for filing (ensure accurate address) Gather TFSA info (ensure accurate address)... Find your property tax or rental agreement for your Northern Residence Deduction Figure out where you have T4s coming from and ensure they have your updated address Sole Proprietors: gather utility bills, cell bills, fuel receipts, meal receipts and have them in one place Does CRA have your most recent address? This slows down your return time; if you need to update this, do it now (ask me how) Do you have tuition receipts for your children? Do you have a travel benefit you need receipts for? You MUST have a quote for flights to Edmonton (for my local clients) ask me how to print off this quote from google flight search. Even if you didnt fly, it is required as proof. (Ill describe in detail on a later post) All of these steps ensure you will have an easy visit to your tax preparer after January Good luck

Money Monday With Christmas fast approaching I thought this was a great subject for todays money Monday. I cannot remember how long ago it was, but my children and I decided no more buying gifts for one another. Christmas can be such a joyful time of year for some, and for others (like myself), not so much. The added stress of the financial burden can put some people over the top. Do NOT go into debt for Christmas presents and DO NOT feel you need to buy the obligatory ...gifts for those around you. Find other ways to celebrate and have a great time, without breaking the bank. Ive had hard lessons, as many of you will have experienced too, with spending money you dont have for gifts that the recipient will never know......just where it took you financially. I have no one to blame but myself, as do you. So take the initiative, set parameters around spending with friends and family and have a fantastic December AND January. This brings me to my family tradition of Bake Day. I started it years ago and I had no real idea the importance of this day, until this year. I wasnt really planning on having it, I thought, meh.....is it necessary? Does everyone still want it? Fast forward a few weeks after that thought........I had friends and family and strangers asking me about my bake day I held every year . One of my daughters even did an essay on it for her class . Does it matter? Yes it sure does . So with excitement I now picked the date, place and time and the list of attendees continues to grow......best part of this day? Everyone is together, having fun, teaching the kids how to bake and we eat, have some adult beverages and some snacks and enjoy what this season is supposed to be about. Family, friends, fellowship, sharing, laughing, and getting your fill of chaos all in one day! Lol Walk into December with a plan, a budget, and you will walk into January with all the same friends and family....and your sanity. Cheers to an amazing Christmas Season and do not be afraid to break tradition to build a new one. Bake Day is my Christmas. I still get strange looks as I do not put up a tree or buy presents. That is ok with me
