We have been led to believe that drinking milk is the key to bone health. Unfortunately, the prevailing myth that drinking milk as children builds up a calcium ...bank that helps us avoid osteoporosis and fracture later in life is simply not true. Today, osteoporosis is a very common and life-threatening problem, it is also highly underdiagnosed. This is part of the reason why prevention is so important when it comes to osteoporosis. In a recent episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, I sat down with Dr. Todd LePine to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to osteoporosis. We get into how chronic inflammation acts as one of the main drivers of osteoporosis, why both bone density and quality are so important, and much more. You can listen to our full conversation in my episode titled, A Functional Medicine Approach To Osteoporosis on your favorite podcast app. See more

Wellness is more than just eating right and exercising; it’s also much more than just feeling okay. Feeling well means feeling whole, balanced, vibrant, ...and alive. And there are many moving pieces that we can tap into to feel empowered in our own wellness journey. The key focus areas that I always recommend my patients pay attention to are community, spirit, emotional health, relationships, nutrition, movement, purpose, and mindset. Within these areas, we can have a dramatic influence on our immediate and future health. There is so much you can do to help yourself to prevent, treat, and heal dis-ease no matter what situation you’re in. You have the power to change your health and these areas are where it all begins. For example, I often see patients who feel they are doing everything right. They are eating nutrient-dense foods, getting adequate sleep, going to the gymbut they just don’t feel good. When I ask about their community and social connections they’re often surprised. But when we dig in and get to the real truthloneliness, social isolation, and a lack of feeling that they belongit becomes painfully clear that this is the missing link. And science shows us that a sense of community is correlated to longer, healthier, and happier lives. The same goes for their close relationships, emotional health, mindset practice, and their sense of purpose. See more

By now, most of my readers probably know how I feel about dairy it’s nature’s perfect food but only if you’re a calf. We have no biological requirement for ...this food, and yet, we’ve been told over and over again that dairy is a great source of calcium, milk makes healthy bones and we should drink it daily. I’m here to tell you that this is not true. Based on research and my experience practicing medicine, I typically advise most of my patients to avoid dairy products completely. Not to mention, upwards of 65% of the world’s population are lactose intolerant after infancy! Cow’s milk is not nature’s perfect food for human adults, despite what the lobbying efforts of the dairy industry say. I often find that symptoms of lactose intolerance are actually caused by difficulty digesting casein, the main protein found in milk, which is often used in other food products as a binding agent. Casein proteins can actually induce inflammation leading to things like eczema, ear infections, congestion, and sinus problems. So, I highly recommend avoiding casein, no matter who you are. If you do consume dairy, always choose grass-fed. If you’re going to consume butter or other dairy products, remember that grass-fed is best. The milk these cows produce has an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of 1:1 which is optimal. Conventionally raised cows eat grains and other crops that make their fatty acid profiles more inflammatory. The milk they produce and as a result the butter and cheese made from it contains more omega-6 fats. See more

We’re living in an age where it’s increasingly hard to avoid exposure to toxins. Some of the most ubiquitous are right on our food, on some of the most commonly... eaten items in the American diet. It’s no wonder that illnesses related to toxicity, like cancer, infertility, and neurological diseases, are on the rise. We need to change our food system if we want to change our health, and it’s issues like these that need our help. I was so happy to sit down with my good friend Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to dig into the topic of glyphosate and corruption in the agricultural industry. You can listen to it here: https://bit.ly/2DeiEBy

Despite what popular magazines might say, if you think you can exercise your way to weight loss, I am sorry to say you are in for a big disappointment. Using ex...ercise to lose weight without changing your diet is asking for failure. You can change your diet and lose weight, but if you exercise and keep your diet the same, you may gain some muscle, improve endurance, and be healthier overall, but you wont shed many pounds. However, combining a whole, unprocessed diet with the right exercise does wonders for your health. I dont want you to get the impression that I dont think exercise is important. In fact, if I could put something in a pill that would reverse almost every chronic disease, it would be exercise. If exercise could be put in a pill, it would be the biggest blockbuster medication of all time. Here are 7 reasons why exercise is still extremely important to our overall health: 1. Better insulin sensitivity. 2. Reduced stress. 3. Improved brain health. 4. Reduced risk for chronic disease. 5. Enhanced detoxification. 6. Slowed aging process. 7. Improved sexual function.

In fact, poor diet is responsible for almost 700,000 deaths in the US each year, and 11 million worldwide! And the average American consumes 55 pounds of added ...sugar each year, which we know is a major contributor towards the diabesity epidemic. The good news is that each step towards real, wholesome, delicious foods reduces your risk for chronic disease and increases your ability to feel great. A few simple ways to eat healthy are: Make sure your plate is 75% vegetables. Eat an array of colorful veggies. Include healthy fats in every meal. Make sure to optimize protein. Eat a low glycemic diet. Avoid conventional dairy. Reduce or cut out processed foods. See more

What we eat affects our thinking, mood, and behavior. Food has been linked to changes in behavior and violence. Consider the following research: Junk food ma...kes kids act violently -- bullying, fighting -- and sugar causes more psychiatric distress, including worry, depression, confusion, insomnia, anxiety, aggression, and feelings of worthlessness. In the article Impact of Nutrition on Social Decision Making, scientists fed two groups different breakfasts. One group got a high carb breakfast, the other a high protein, low-carb breakfast. The high-carb group was more likely to engage in social punishment behavior such as negative comments and actions toward others in structured behavioral experiments. Now consider that most Americans eat dessert for breakfast, full of sugar and carbs -- cereal, muffins, bagels, sugared coffees, pancakes, French toast, oatmeal. This does not make for a very nice society. Those who consume high levels of refined oils (currently more than 10% of our diet and found in all ultra-processed foods) and low levels of omega-3 fats from fish have higher rates of depression, suicide, and homicide. Our consumption of these refined oils (mostly soybean oil) went up to 248% from 1970 to 2010. See more

If youre lactose intolerant or sensitive to dairy, then you should avoid it at all costs. But even if you are tolerant, it shouldnt be a major part of your di...et. Milk from conventionally raised cows is full of hormones, chemicals, and inflammatory compounds. Stay away from it, and reduce your intake of all other industrially produced cheeses or dairy products. If you suffer from digestive issues; autoimmune disease; weight gain; type 2 diabetes; PMS; infertility; heavy menstrual bleeding; skin disorders like acne, eczema, or psoriasis; allergies; sinusitis; or any chronic disease, you should avoid dairy, or at least eliminate it and then add it back to see how it affects you. That said, dairy doesnt have to be completely off-limits. Its fine to have some grass-fed milk, cheese, and butter from time to time-- as long as theyre full-fat, free of additives, and ethically and sustainably produced. What dairy CAN you eat? -Grass-fed whole milk in very small amounts--a splash in your coffee is okay; ideally, use goats milk -Grass-fed, full fat, unsweetened yogurt that contains milk and live cultures an nothing else; ideally use goat or sheep yogurt -Kefir (fermented cow milk), following the same rules for yogurt -Whole-milk, grass-fed cheese made with no additives -Butter or ghee, grass-fed, of course -All these products are made with goats milk or sheeps milk when you can find them, but still in small amounts. This is an unprecedented time, a once in 100-year pandemic. A time for us to be level-headed, open-hearted, and focused on what we can do to protect ourselves, ...our families, our communities, and our country, and be kind to each other. A time to hunker down with family, to take care of ourselves, to cook and cherish the people and things we love. The more we can face the threat with calm and kindness, the better able we will be to survive and thrive. The threat is to our health and to our economy. We have weathered worse as a nation including two World Wars and The Great Depression with far greater devastation and death (although not on our soil). There will be loss and loss of life, but we will emerge in 12-18 months with a new vaccine, new medications and treatment options, and more widespread immunity. COVID-19, the viral disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is a global pandemic. Scientists estimate that 40% to 70% of our population will be affected. Those with a chronic disease will face a greater threat. In some cases, they will be affected ten times more than the rest of the population, underscoring the need to protect this vulnerable group. Additionally, the mortality rate estimates range from 0.6% to 4% percent and is much higher in people over 75 years old. The question my patients, friends, and family are asking is What can we do? The answer is a lot, both to reduce our own risks and reduce the spread nationwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared this a global pandemic. The federal government has declared a national emergency including a ban on flights from Europe. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advised that any gatherings be limited to less than 50 people and President Trump advises gatherings of no more than 10 people. Many states and cities have shuttered schools, restaurants, and bars. San Francisco has ordered its citizens to shelter in place for 3 weeks. Sixty million Italians are essentially under house arrest. Most businesses have canceled meetings and conferences and are encouraging remote working. Airlines have cut flights. The NBA, MLB, NHL, and Broadway have suspended their games and shows. Social distancing is becoming the norm (for good reason). This is a massively disruptive pandemic, no doubt. To attack this pandemic (and not just protect ourselves), as my friend Jordan Shalin, MD reminded me, we must weigh the cost of being wrong against the chance of being wrong (to paraphrase the political theorist Hannah Arendt). Lets start by reviewing what we know to date (and it is changing daily). Since this is something no one has ever seen in our lifetime, take all facts as a potential changing sea of scientific information. Did you know that our hunter-gatherer ancestors ate more than 800 varieties of plants? Thats how they got so much fiber each day. They foraged far and wide, th...ey typically ate a range of wild plants of all different colors. In other words, they ate the rainbow, and you should too. Our ancestors didnt have drugs or pills. They ate their medicine in the form of plants. In general, the more colors you eat when it comes to plants, the more anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, healing compounds from the phytonutrients youll soak up. Some of these colors even work together synergistically to have a more powerful effect, which is another reason you should eat a diverse array of veggies. Though these are not essential like vitamins and minerals, without them you will age faster. Vegetables and fruits use their colors to signal which beneficial substances they contain. Red means one thing, yellow another, purple something else. The colors attract the insects and animals that will disperse the plants seeds; these are the same chemicals -- phytonutrients that give flowers their colors. Its the language of the plant kingdom, and we would do well to learn it because each color represents a different group of healing compounds. See more

As Ive mentioned before, about 75% of your plate should be vegetables. The deeper the color, the better. The more variety, the healthier. Eating a rainbow of c...olors every day is a surefire way to get an abundance of nutrients and beneficial phytochemicals through your diet. Stick with mostly non starchy veggies. These foods are high in fiber, too, so theyll fill you up without filling you out. Winter squashes and sweet potatoes are fine in moderation ( cup a day). Not a ton of potatoes! French fries dont count even though they are the number one vegetable in America. Always choose real vegetables in their most whole and natural form. See more

What does 'usual care' for low back pain look like? Not great, according to a new systematic review of healthcare provided to patients with low back pain in fam...ily practice and emergency departments (published in Pain, 2019). "Less than 20% of patients with low back pain received evidence-based information and advice from their family practitioner. Around 1 in 4 patients with low back pain received referral for imaging in family practice and 1 in 3 in emergency departments. Up to 30% of patients with low back pain were prescribed opioids in family practice, and up to 60% in emergency departments. Large numbers of patients that saw a physician for low back pain received care that is inconsistent with evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. Usual care included overuse of imaging and opioid prescription, and underuse of advice and information. Suboptimal care may contribute to the massive burden of the condition worldwide." A systematic review and meta-analysis (BJSM 2019) Conclusion: Increased rates of participation in running, regardless of its dose, would probably lead to substantial improvements in population health and longevity. Any amount of running, even just once a week, is better than no running, but higher doses of running may not necessarily be associated with greater mortality benefits.
