In a choir, you're almost always singing words -- poetry -- and this week you'll hear poetry by Emily Brontë and Wendall Barry. Caroline Shaw (the young American Pulitzer Prize-winning singer and composer) and Johannes Brahms took very different approaches to the same biblical text; you'll hear her new choral song, And the Swallow, which shares some of its words with the central movement of the German Requiem by Brahms. Wendall Barry's beautiful poem about how connecting with animals helps us stay in the moment, The Peace of Wild Things, has inspired several composers. You'll hear Joan Szymko ~ Composer's version for upper voices sung by Elektra Women's Choir; Jake Runestad's version gets a lovely performance on a recent recording by Conspirare. I'm thrilled to introduce you to an Estonian composer who's stepping out from the shadow of his very famous countryman Arvo Part. Tõnu Kõrvits set Emily Bronte's words in his swoon-worthy Mooreland Elegies for choir and string orchestra. And -- not the same text, but the same concept. You'll hear ORA Singers' recording of Spem in Alium by Thomas Tallis (check out their amazing socially distanced performance at the Tate Modern) as well as the new work they commissioned to go with it by Scotland's top composer James MacMillan. It totally takes my breath away.
