A recent paper from our Humans & the Microbiome program, led by Brett Finlay of University of British Columbia and Tamara Giles-Vernick of Institut Pasteur, looks at how necessary hygiene practices to combat COVID-19 might create unintended consequences by reducing the healthy diversity of our human microbiome. The study notes that although there are ways we can promote a healthy microbiome while following COVID-19 rules, these options are not available to all people, adding yet another dimension to the many health inequities that have been amplified by the pandemic.

There are niches of this planet that are completely uninhabited, and those become really interesting. What is the thing that broke it?"
