Willie O’Ree broke the NHL’s colour barrier in 1958 during his debut with the Boston Bruins, becoming the first black person to play in the National Hockey League. Now sixty-three years later, the team will honour Mr. O’Ree with the retirement of his number 22 jersey on February 18th. In recognition of this historical event, Mayor Mike O'Brien will officially proclaim January 18 - the date Mr. O’Ree made his NHL debut - as an Annual Willie O’Ree Day in Fredericton at the Feb...ruary 8th meeting of City Council. With the help of Mr. O’Ree’s family and friends, the City will also host a number of celebratory events to honour Mr. O’Ree’s inspiring lifetime of achievements. The third annual City of Fredericton Artist-in-Residence program will take place this summer in Odell Park and the Fredericton Botanic Garden. The program provides a unique opportunity for artists to work on creative projects in the natural surroundings of one of Canada’s best old-growth forests or in the nearby community-run botanic garden (open and free to the public). Local artists are invited to submit a proposal for a two-week residency in either location. Please note th...at due to COVID-19, this year’s Artist in Residence Program will unfortunately be limited to artists in New Brunswick Health Zone 3, so in the event of travel restrictions, there will not be any unexpected gaps in programming. Measures implemented last summer to comply with Provincial public safety protocols will be in effect again this summer. This means that artists will be located outside in the park or gardens, rather than inside a building. Artists may select a location which suits their work and will be provided with portable lawn signs which will indicate that they are the ‘artist in residence’. Park and garden visitors are encouraged to interact with artists while maintaining existing physical distancing requirements. Additionally, rather than hosting in-person community engagement activities, artists will engage with the community through online activities. Artists will be active on social media with brief daily updates on their residency as well as occasional more in-depth interactions such as a demo, artist talk, workshop. Interested Artists can find the full call for applications on the City’s website at www.fredericton.ca/artistinresidence. The deadline to apply is March 5, 2021.

Fredericton is one step closer to building a new live performance venue to replace the current failing Fredericton Playhouse facility. A team lead by Diamond Schmitt Architects has been selected to design a new Performing Arts Centre for the city. Diamond Schmitt will lead a multidisciplinary team including several based in Fredericton and elsewhere in Atlantic Canada. The COVID-19 pandemic has made clear that the Playhouse has a huge economic impact on Fredericton: Restaura...nts, hotels and other businesses benefit greatly from having an exciting live performance venue in our downtown, said Councillor Bruce Grandy, Chair of the City’s Development Committee. That’s why it’s vital to continue moving forward with the PAC project so that we can ensure the future of this economic anchor in our city. A series of studies have shown that the existing Playhouse is at the end of its life and the only feasible solution is a replacement. A comprehensive design readies us for the current Playhouse’s unavoidable failure, allowing us to move quickly with a clear plan in order to avoid a long closure, Mayor Mike O’Brien. The Bill Thorpe Walking Bridge got a glow up! City engineers had a great idea during the recent refurbishment of our beloved walking bridge: Why not use some of the materials to create a few benches? The result: Four floating lookout benches, safely tucked in next to the railings and out of the traffic flow, built from the same wood and weathering steel as the railing. Come check them out this weekend!
