You are invited to attend a virtual Special Meeting of Council on February 16, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. about the proposed update to the City’s Official Plan. If you would like to attend the virtual meeting please register by noon on Friday, February 12, 2021 with Kevan Sumner, City Planner at [email protected]. If you are unable to attend the virtual meeting, you may provide written comments to:... Kevan Sumner, City Planner 60 Fourteenth Street North, 2nd Floor Kenora, ON P9N 4M9 . An Official Plan provides direction for the growth and development of the community and where land uses (e.g. residential, commercial, industrial, parks) should be located. The City of Kenora is undertaking the legislated five year review of its Official Plan as required by the Planning Act. The City’s current Official Plan was approved by the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing on November 5, 2015. The Official Plan Review will update and refine the goals, objectives, policies, and schedules of the Official Plan to ensure that it is consistent with the 2020 Provincial Policy Statement, and reflects matters of local interest. It is noted that the formal Official Plan Review process has been ongoing since 2020 and has included one community engagement event to date. An online Visioning Workshop and community survey were available on the City’s website from November 19 to December 3, 2020. Public feedback received has been, and continues to be considered in the advancement of updating policies in the City Official Plan. The Special Meeting of Council will enable further opportunity for the public to speak to revisions that may be required as part of the Official Plan Review for the City. The intent of this meeting is not to review a Draft Official Plan, which will be prepared and made available for review in the following months, but to consider what ought to be further reviewed moving forward. The subject lands include all lands located within the City of Kenora municipal boundary. Accordingly, no key map is provided. https://www.kenora.ca//notice-of-special-meeting-of-counci

When will your street be plowed? Use the snow plow priority map to find out when the snowplow will clear your road. Please be patient while you wait for plows to get to your street after it snows.... We clear the streets and sidewalks based on three priority levels: Priority 1 these roads are cleared first and will be cleared within 12-16 hours after a snowfall event has ended Priority 2 these roads will be cleared AFTER priority 1 roads but these roads will also be cleared within 24 hours after a snowfall event has ended Priority 3 these roads will be cleared AFTER priority 1 and 2 roads are cleared Learn more about snow removal and how you can help: https://www.kenora.ca/en/living-here/snow-removal.aspx

Introducing new pay-by-plate parking kiosks! To use the payby-plate method, the vehicle plate number is required. Park at metered space and then find the closest kiosk to enter plate information and purchase parking time. There are signs at the end of each parking section with directional arrows pointing towards the kiosk location. Each of the twenty kiosks can be identified by the Pay Here signage. The kiosks accept toonies, loonies and quarters, Visa and Mastercard,... AND the Hotspot app. Time limits still apply for on-street metered spaces. Benefits: 1) You don't have to return to your vehicle to place a receipt on the dash! Our By-law Enforcement Officers can check if parking has been paid for via their mobile devices. BUT please keep your receipt while parked just in case a parking ticket is issued in error. 2) If you need to move to a new parking space while you are shopping, dining, or doing business downtown, AND still have time left on the meter, no need to purchase parking again until the original time has expired. 3) Once the individual meters in the kiosk sections are removed in the spring, there will be more room for pedestrians to move about. AND this will help with snow removal on downtown sidewalks and streets too.

If you are planning fireworks to celebrate new years , you are allowed to set them off between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. in the City of Kenora. You do not need a fire permit for fireworks. You should be aware that you are responsible for the full cost for Emergency Services to extinguish a fire and other damages caused by the detonation of your own fireworks.... Here are some important safety tips: -Appoint a responsible person to be in charge. Only adults who are aware of the hazards and essential safety precautions should handle and discharge fireworks. -Carefully read and follow the label directions on fireworks packaging. Always keep a water hose or pail of water close by when discharging fireworks. -Discharge fireworks well away from combustible materials like buildings, trees and dry grass. -Keep onlookers a safe distance away, upwind from the area where fireworks are discharged. Practice physical distancing. -Light only one firework at a time and only when they are on the ground. Never try to light a firework in your hand or re-light dud fireworks. For dud fireworks, it is best to wait 30 minutes and soak them in a bucket of water. Dispose of them in a metal container. -Discharge fireworks only if wind conditions do not create a safety hazard. -Keep sparklers away from children. Sparklers burn extremely hot and can ignite clothing, cause blindness and result in severe burns. As the sparkler wire remains hot for some minutes after burnout, it should be immediately soaked in water to avoid injury. -If someone gets burned, run cool water over the wound for three to five minutes and seek medical attention, if necessary. For more information on fireworks regulations in the City of Kenora, please contact Kenora Fire.

With the limited snow cover, the trails are in good condition to get some fresh air and exercise during this busy holiday time. There are a variety of trails to explore, such as the Mink Bay trail. You will learn about the historical and cultural landscapes of this area as the trail system winds through the wetlands and boreal forest of Mink and Portage Bay, into the green spaces, and businesses o...f downtown Keewatin. Make some plans to check out all our trails and learn about trail etiquette before you head out. https://www.kenora.ca/en/visit-play/trails.aspx Mink Bay wetland trail in the fall, courtesy of Councillor Sharon Smith.
