The Divorce Act Changes Explained (available) - This technical guide provides information about the changes to the Divorce Act that were made pursuant to legislation the Government of Canada passed in June 2019. Each entry details the amendment to the legislation, explains the change, and provides the reason for it. For Families: The following Public Legal Education and Information (PLEI) resources provide information about the Divorce Act amendments. Materials are available ...on the family law pages of Justice Canada’s website at: https://www.justice.gc.ca/eng/fl-df/index.html: Fact Sheets - Fact sheets are available on a number of topics related to the Divorce Act amendments. These resources are available in a format that can be printed. Topics include: Parenting arrangements after separation or divorce Duties for Parents and others A Child’s Views and Preferences Divorce and Family Violence Family dispute resolution: resolving family law issues out of court Relocation (coming soon) Parenting Plan Checklist (available but being updated) - This is a checklist that helps parents identify some of the issues and questions they need to consider when developing a parenting plan. Parenting Plan Tool (available but being updated) - This interactive tool provides parents with options to develop a personalized parenting plan (a written document that outlines how parents will raise their children after separation or divorce). What Happens Next (available but being updated) - This booklet is designed to help children learn some basic facts about family law and give them an idea of the processes that parents may go through when they separate. It aims to help children realize that it’s normal for them to have an emotional response to their parents’ divorce, and encourages children to voice their concerns to someone they trust. Parents can read the booklet with their younger children, while older children can read it themselves. Making Plans (available but being updated) - This guide for parents contains helpful information about parenting after separation and divorce when deciding on the best parenting arrangement for their children. The guide provides information for parents who are making parenting arrangements under the Divorce Act, and can also be useful to parents who are separating even if the Divorce Act does not apply. Step by Step (available but being updated) - This technical guide provides 8 easy steps to help determine child support pursuant to the Federal Child Support Guidelines (Divorce Act regulations). It will be updated to reflect changes to federal family laws. Family law pages updates The family law pages of the Department of Justice website are being updated continuously with new materials, so we would encourage you refer to them on a regular basis. #familylawmediation Congratulations to our newest family law mediator Chelsie McKay. Chelsie is a family law lawyer who has now attained recognition with the Ministry of Saskatchewan as a family law mediator. Well done Chelsie!
Due to today’s dangerous conditions CJC will be closed for the remainder of today. You will continue to have email access to your lawyer. Stay safe.
Our CJC family is important. Many live out of town. We do not wish to risk their safety or yours. As such we have very limited staff. If your matter is urgent please email [email protected] and we will have one of our lawyers get back to you as soon as possible. Stay safe.
Effective November 6, 2020 it is mandatory that masks are to be worn in common areas of the building and as well as entering CJC premises. Hoping you are staying safe.
Interested in Family Mediation? CJC provides this service. Experienced Family Law Lawyers who are also recognized as Family Mediators can assist. Curious about Family Mediation? Here are some things to consider: Family Mediation Family mediation allows for flexible options for resolution not always available through a court order. An impartial third party, the mediator will assist in solving family disputes by encouraging understanding and focus and helping people resolv...e issues relating to parenting, separation, and/or divorce. The benefit of the process is that it is voluntary and works towards a solution that meets the needs of parents and children. Mediation can take place before, during the court process, or after to avoid future conflict. It can be less costly and is private. Mediation is appropriate for participants who are willing to work on a solution with the other party, feel safe to discuss and be able to communicate needs and list to concerns. The mediator does not take sides and cannot provide legal advice. Types of Issues Given the process is voluntary most concerns can be addressed when working towards solutions. If family mediation issues such as parenting, child and spousal support, division of property and other issues effecting communication can be addressed. Length of Time Length of time will depend on many factors, such as: availability of parties, number of issues and/or concerns, level of conflict between the parties and willingness to participate, communicate and cooperate. Lawyers Your family mediator does not act as a lawyer. You will be encouraged to seek independent legal advice if you reach agreement and possibly before and during the process, so you are fully informed of your rights and obligations. You will be asked to review your final agreement reached through mediation with your respective lawyer before signing.
Happy Halloween

It's A Girl!!! CJC is proud to welcome legal assistant Ashley. Ashley is a small town girl, living in a lonely world, she took the midnight train going anywhere. Except it was from her family farm in Hanley to Saskatoon. Ashley attended Saskatoon Business College and hails to us from the Court of Queen's Bench for Saskatchewan. Before coming to CJC Ashley had spare time. During that spare time she enjoyed family time at the lake chasing about her fur babies Lady and Rhe...a. Little known fact, Ashley dabbles in singing. She says no animals have been harmed or run off. But Ashley we shall be the judges of that. So hop to it and get singing. We are so pleased to have Ashley with us. Her bright smile and charming personality are a great addition to the CJC family.
We just have the best clients. Thank you for making my day.

RESOLVING FAMILY LAW DISPUTES DURING COVID-19 These are challenging times indeed. Life doesn't stop. Decisions still have to be made such as personal, financial and family decisions. Even under these circumstances that have not occurred before decisions still have to be made. The COVID-19 virus, has changed many options previously relied on and not presently available. That does not mean we cannot work through the issues it just means we have to do it a little differently.... We can continue to coach, to provide unbundled or limited services. We can continue to hold 4-way meetings. And we can continue with mediation and arbitration services. We just have to show a little creativity in how we attempt to resolve issues. Remotely and virtual meetings are some options available. We are creative and we are here to put your "family first." Parenting during the Pandemic. Court Orders and agreements for parenting are are binding. You must follow them. There is no guidance from the court at present on this situation. But I would urge considering a common sense putting your children first approach. This is not legal advice. Just thoughts on the present situation. I've had numerous calls regarding parenting and the refusal to exchange children. Again, not legal advice or an opinion but points to consider:...Continue reading

WERE DOING IT! Creative client signing. I came to client home and put documents in mailbox rang the bell and ran (knock knock ginger) Client opened door and signed inside where I could see. Then put back in the mailbox and closed the door. However we chatted so long from a distance we missed a spot. So well do it again tomorrow. All about the client service because you are valued.
UPDATE: We are going to continue to work on your matters. We are set up remotely and have in-office safety precautions. We continue to accept new clients, however consults and first meetings will take place over the phone. Our assistants will be able to take care of this for you. We can receive and send documents through email. Do know though, that unless your matter is urgent there will be no immediate court applications.
To our clients please review the updates regarding court matters. https://sasklawcourts.ca//court-of-queen-s/covid-19-update
CJC & Co. will continue to attend to your matters during the COVID-19 outbreak. However we will be doing our part to reduce transmission of the virus. We are... remaining calm but will be vigilant in protecting transmission to those who are vulnerable. We will be working remotely as well as off hours and not necessarily from 8:30AM to 4:30PM. As such we may not get back to you during those hours but may in the evening instead. We will not be receiving in office appointments at this time unless absolutely necessary. During those appointments we will require hand sanitizing, no shaking of hands and a distance of several metres. We will attend to rescheduling in office appointments to telephone appointments. If you have travelled outside of Saskatchewan in the last 14 days we will not be able to accommodate in office appointments until the self-isolation of 14 days has passed. If you have court scheduled matters we have not received information as of yet regarding postponement. We will advise you of your particular matter once we receive that information. See more
To all our valued clients. Please know that we will continue to look after your needs during this COVID-19 outbreak. Thankfully we have the ability to work remotely but as we are a small firm we are also able to segregate ourselves in office. We realize that some in person appointments are absolutely necessary and in those cases we will be practicing hand sanitizing and social distancing for ourselves and clients. Otherwise telephone or FaceTime appointments will be arranged. If you have court matters pending at this time they are still proceeding. Should that change we will update you accordingly.
This is a real thing at CJC.
