Social media continues to blur the line between marketing and PR functions. It is my belief that social media must be flexible and serve both purposes as required and dictated by consumer preference. From a PR perspective, social media can be used to build ongoing communication to foster relationships with clients and fans. A brilliant methodology of interesting posts melded with real time feedback is the ticket here. Social media marketing is also powerful tool of persua...sion, id used appropriately. Here clients and fans can stay up to date with offerings, events and the like. Be cautioned though, using social media as a traditional advertising channel can certainly be faux pas in the eyes of the consumer. So what it really comes down to is knowing your market and followers. Are they there just for updates or do they desire to be part of a collective? Once you answer this question, then usage becomes a piece of cake. - CK out!

Today we're going to talk Social Media for the socially awkward business. I think the biggest problem with social media marketing is that most businesses still assume that it is a "traditional media channel"... WRONG! Social media is all about maintaining relationships with followers and fans and promoting thought leadership. It is NOT a news feed (well not wholly anyway) and it is NOT an advertising channel! It is, however, an incredible way to meet people on their terms and to create social value for them. Just remember, with any virtual platform, there are REAL people on the other end and they must be treated as such. These are REAL interactions with REAL consequences for abusing that relationship.
