. We were focused. We had our trips and objectives lined up for the year. Some of us were kicking off to go to warm rocks in the south while others were gearing up for other objectives both in Squamish and around the world. The gym was busy with a general air of motivation. . As a community, our vices, escapes, and many of our year’s goals evaporated over the course of a week in March. Our focus was divided betw...een news, PHOs and a building anxiety around our mental, physical and financial futures. We acted with the most vulnerable in mind; closing businesses, staying home and limiting access to our outdoor spaces. As the weeks turned into months, what we started to miss most was that shared moment of elation at a friend sending their project, the banter and support of the people who spot us, belay us and keep us motivated; that simple act of ‘being present’ for each other. We adapted. We tried to figure out how to adjust and bring that value to the new reality; training from home, learning to zoom, reaching out to those in need. At the gym we reconfigured our operations and found a way to open again. We retrained our staff, took away what we couldn’t keep and tried to move forward using the best, and ever changing, information. This year has asked more from us than we could have ever imagined. In turn, Ground Up has also asked more of our staff and more of you. It’s been frustrating, confusing and scary but we have leaned into the discomfort and asked you to meet us there- and you did. Thank you for being our inspiration and our motivation to get through this. We are so grateful to be a part of this community. Despite everything this year has thrown at us, because of it too, we want to wish you a very happy new year. We are going to take the lessons of 2020 and cultivate the resilience and connections while committing to learn from the challenges. Let’s continue to be kind, calm, safe, and hold onto what matters. We'll get through this together, because at the end of the day it is is what matters most.
