As your child approaches two years old, you will notice an ability to sit and attend, to visually scan objects, to match colors, to coordinate their eyes with their hands, and to manipulate objects. Parents often ask me what kind of toys they should buy their child to promote development. At this age I love single-insert puzzles or 3D insert cubes like these. Something as inexpensive as this can work on many age specific developmental skills!

I’ve had a lot of parents ask me recently how to introduce their child to a face mask when they have sensory processing difficulties, specifically tactile sensi...tivities. I thought I’d share some of my Tips, but I’m sure you have others! Please share in comments what has worked for you! Not all children can tolerate the elastic behind their ears. Try masks that have adjustable ear elastics or ones that have ties or elastics that stretch behind the head. If this isn’t successful, you can attach the elastics to buttons sewn onto a headband or a hat (so many adaptations on Pinterest!). Let your child be part of his/her mask selection. Fun prints and softer fabrics will be tolerated more. Start wearing the mask around the house for practice. Have your child put one on his/her favorite doll or stuffed animal. Normalize it inside the home before going into public. Increase wearing tolerance slowly, at home. Some children may need a visual timer. Use a sticker chart for encouragement. Social stories are a great way to explain why everyone is wearing a mask and it’s importance. It’s also a great way to acknowledge how difficult it is for your child to wear the mask and that you understand their feelings. Read it with your child at bedtime and take that time to talk about it. There are masks with transparent mouth windows to help a child see facial expressions. When a mask is just not tolerable, face shields can be a secondary option. They even sell some child friendly ones attached to a baseball hat. Hoping you all stay healthy! #OTTips #tactilesensitivities #sensoryprocessing #autism #masksforkids #cliniqueconnexion
