Take a paddle through your imagination! We loved this recent musing shared on Instagram from a paddler in Scotland who purchased this wooden model canoe from our store. "Sitting on my bookcase is a little model canoe. Between travel restrictions and winter weather it’s probably going to be the only canoe I’ll be paddling for a while. However, with a beverage of choice, a map or guide book and a bit of imagination, it can inspire so many journeys - be they memories of past paddles, ones yet to come or those that are pure fantasy. It doesn’t really matter, I can shut everything else out and once again feel the current of a river, and hear only the water dripping from my paddle blade...." : @greencanoes

This canoe and skiff, made by Gilbert Gordon at the Bobcaygeon Gordon Canoe Co for his neighbour, Dr. Thomas Thorne, might look a little unusual, but there is a good reason why! Both boats stayed in the Thorne family for decades. They were safely stored in a stable on the original Thorne property in Bobcaygeon with newspapers draped over their hulls to protect them from dirt and dust. Over time (and many hot summers) the newspapers bonded to the varnish on the exterior of... the boats. The skiff was eventually stripped in order to undergo refinishing, but the canoe still sports remnants of the old newspapers, some dating as far back as 1918! This canoe may have a delicate name, but it has a rough and tumble past! Blue Damsel is a surprisingly elegant early 20th century 18-foot Chestnut Guide model canoe. It was originally used for timber cruising in Quebec and it still bears the scars of the hobnailed boots of its crew pitted into its floor. If pressed to name one, our Curator notes Blue Damsel, which is not currently on display in the museum, is one of his favourites!

In 2015, the CBC series The Nature of Things was preparing for an upcoming episode called "Equalizer", whereby contemporary Canadian Olympians would compete against Olympic performances many decades ago using the equipment of the day. Multi-medallist (including Gold) kayaker Adam van Koeverden agreed to compete against the record time of Swedish kayaking legend Gert Fredriksson, and to discover what Fredriksson paddled in 1948 (and hopefully secure a working example) they rea...ched out to the Canadian Canoe Museum for help! We secured a battered example of a 1940s-era K1 (single kayak) Laxen model, made by Swedish manufacturer Max Andersson. Typical of Scandinavian makers of the day, the Laxen’s hull was made using cutting edge techniques perfected during war of layers of thin mahogany veneer bonded together with resins over a form, and baked in an autoclave. The kayak had been donated by Olympian Bert Oldershaw (whose grandson Mark, another Olympic medallist, trained with Adam) was likely used as a training hull once it became outdated at a canoe club. With six holes in the hull, liberal use of fibreglass, extensive damage to the deck framing and stems, not to mention missing the thin fabric that once covered the decks, the kayak offered an exciting project! To see how Adam performed in a nearly 70-year old racing kayak, see the episode: https://www.cbc.ca/natureofthings/episodes/the-equalizer #museum30 - RESTORATION

Meet MJ, a Museum Management and Curatorship student at Fleming College. She is currently interning at the Canadian Canoe Museum, in partnership with the Haida Gwaii Museum! In speaking about her work, MJ says "my work involves digitizing 138 35mm slides from a project that took place between the founder of the Canadian Canoe Museum's collection and Haida Gwaii in the early 70s. In order to digitize the slide collection I have to photograph each slide on a light board with a DSLR camera. From here, each slide is edited using Photoshop. This involves cropping out slide frames and fixing any imperfections caused from dust and debris. Digital photographs are then properly named and sorted." #museum30 - LIGHT

We are pleased to announce that Johnson Park has been deemed viable for the building of our new canoe museum! This confirmation clears the way for moving to the next phase of feasibility activities and determining next steps with The City of Peterborough. To assist us with the realization of a new creative vision suitable to a fresh waterfront site, the new museum will be designed by local, award-winning Lett Architects Inc. We are thrilled that recently concluded due dilig...ence explorations, environmental assessments, testing and feasibility studies have substantiated the Johnson Park location as a viable site for the building of the new world-class canoe museum, confirms Carolyn Hyslop, executive director, The Canadian Canoe Museum. The museum will now enter the next phase of feasibility and validation activities. This process will help us fine tune budget and overall costs, design and the project schedule with a view to being shovel-ready by the end of 2021, says Hyslop. In a year that has brought every manner of exceptional challenges to us all, we are delighted to close out 2020 with positive and hopeful news. Having found a viable site for this extraordinary project that will see the new museum situated on the shores of Peterborough’s Little Lake what a terrific kick off to 2021! concludes Hyslop. Now here is a Flashback Friday! Who remembers this one?! #AskACurator: What is your favourite exhibit that you’ve ever worked on (submitted by Liz Watkins) In 2012 we made a temporary exhibit called Canoes to Go: The Search for a Truly Portable Boat. For this exhibit, we gathered together canoes in our collection that collapse, come apart, deflate, and become more portable. It was really interactive and contained many hands-on elements that were so much fun to create!... Our Curator and a team of volunteers made a replica of a folding canoe so visitors could try it out themselves (link to info: https://canoemuseum.ca/2012-08-08-the-douglas-patent-foldin). We also made a replica of an inflatable ‘boat cloak’ (link to info: https://canoemuseum.ca/2012-03-01-canoes-to-go-a-19th-centu) complete with the cane that morphs into a paddle. Advanced Elements donated one of their modern inflatable canoes to the museum so we could make a magnetic fishing area for kids to catch fish species that are native to Canadian waters. It was so much fun to research and create these hands-on elements, then to see visitors enjoy trying them out as much as we enjoyed putting them together! - BETH, Associate Curator

This canoe of yet-to-be identified Indigenous community origins was taken to England following the American Revolution and it remained at a family estate until 2012, when it was gifted to The Canadian Canoe Museum and returned to Canada after 230 years. - JEREMY, Curator You can learn more about this canoe and its ...journey on our blog: https://canoemuseum.ca/2012-09-11-welcoming-a-canoe-back-to Be sure to check out our Instagram and Twitter (both @cndncanoemuseum) for more answers to your questions, and let us know if you have any more!

#AskACurator: What are the metal frames in the warehouse that appear to go together like a form but with no explanation (submitted by Andre Cloutier) If I am correct, this question refers to a large collection of precisely-forged, curved pieces of iron that describe the curved, cross-sections of a canoe’s hull. They would likely have been assembled along a longitudinal spine to create the skeleton of a canoe making form. The exact manner of their assembly and use has not b...een fully understood. These pieces were donated by Phil Rye of Peterborough, and once belonged to his grandfather Harold B. Rye, boat builder and paddle manufacturer. They were also accompanied by some of the cutter components from Rye’s paddle-making machine. I understand that this question might have come from canoe maker and enthusiast Andre Cloutier. The CCM team would be interested in gathering a team of canoe makers familiar with turn-of-the-century techniques to better understand the use of these iron components. If you can share any information, please get in touch! - JEREMY, Curator Be sure to check out our Instagram and Twitter (both @cndncanoemuseum) for more answers to your questions, and let us know if you have any more!

#AskACurator: Is there an unsung artifact in the collection that you feel like you're the only one to really appreciate it Why are you drawn to it We have so many wonderful pieces in our collection that my answer could change daily! One that comes to mind is a small, pine dugout from Ontario (second canoe on the rack) with surprisingly elegant lines that has had its battered and cracked hull repaired countless times with forged iron fastenings, and its seams packed with caulking. At a later point in the canoe’s career, its owner carefully stretched and soldered panels of sheet metal over the outside of the hull. The result is rugged but beautiful in execution.

Today, we are announcing that we have identified a preferred site, Johnson Park, for our new museum project. Next week, the museum will be carrying out due diligence work on the site to determine its viability. Johnson Park is a City-owned property at 2077 Ashburnham Drive in Peterborough, ON. It is situated on Little Lake, north of Beavermead Park and south of the Parks Canada-Trent Severn Waterway head offices. The Canadian Canoe Museum is extremely hopeful that the Johnso...n Park location will emerge as a viable site for the new museum build project, said Carolyn Hyslop, executive director, The Canadian Canoe Museum. We are bolstered by the support of The City of Peterborough and the Otonabee Region Conservation Authority (ORCA) who are involved in the feasibility exploration. Braeden, our Collections Intern from Fleming College'sMuseum Management and Curatorship program (Fleming MMC Students) was hard at work again this week cataloguing our collection and filling out condition reports! The origins of the Canadian Canoe Museum are found within a remarkable watercraft collection conceived of by Professor Kirk Wipper and located at a summer camp named Camp Kandalore, near Haliburton, Ontario. This private collection, which began in the late-1950s, was first imagined as an enhancement to the camp’s on-water programming and would later develop into the remarkable Kanawa International Museum of Canoes, Kayaks and Rowing Craft. Over the course of 30 years, this... collection of canoes and kayaks grew and grew, resulting in what would become the largest known collection of its kind in the world! This hand-carved sign, made from a massive piece of pine, hung near the log building that was the principal structure of the Kanawa museum where many of the canoes were displayed. The sign may look small, but it is over 12.5 feet long! #museum30 - ORIGINS

Did you know that the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokoyo (prior to being cancelled due to COVID) would have marked the FIRST time that women's canoe events were inclu...ded in the international competition, having been previously excluded? Thanks to the advocacy efforts of trailblazers like Sheila Kuyper, (Canadian women’s sprint canoe pioneer and National Champion), and the organization she founded, WomenCAN (formerly Vote YES for Women's Canoe) we look forward to seeing these events make their entrance onto the world stage when it is safe once more. We are fortunate to have one of Sheila's racing canoes, her Plastex Futura C-1, in our collection, signed with: "WOMENCAN"! #museum30 - FIRST

Remembered as "Canada's most remarkable solo traveller", canoeist Herb Pohl (1930-2006), logged nearly 30 major canoe expeditions throughout his life! After Herb's untimely death in 2006, his friends found on his desk amongst maps, photographs, journals, and reference books, evidence that he had been quietly working his trip accounts (pictured here) into a book he intended to call "The Lure of Faraway Places". His friends saw to it that Herb's wish was granted, and in May 20...07 his book (edited by our own James Raffan) launch was held at the museum! Herb's canoe and his library of books, maps, and slides, were donated to the museum by his wife Maura, where they live now (pictured is a selection of his collection in our Reflections Gallery). #museum30 - NARRATIVE

This well-used PFD belonged to celebrated canoeist, author, filmmaker and environmentalist, Bill Mason (note the MASON inscribed in magic marker). It was donated, along with his 16-foot red Prospector canoe, to The Canadian Canoe Museum after his daughter, Becky, performed a canoe ballet on the Trent-Severn Waterway in Peterborough in 1999! Walter Dean Canoes and Boats operated in Toronto from 1888 to 1931. Dean was a superb maker with a fine attention to detail, and perhaps best known for his famous Sunnyside Torpedo model (commonly called the Sunnyside Cruiser), popular along the Toronto waterfront. This button is part of our MacGregor collection which is made up of original documents, publications, images and objects that are largely associated with the development, manufacture, and marketing of canoes from 1870s to 1970s. #museum30 - BUTTON
