I have my bad times too! As a coach, it’s important to me to let my clients know that I struggle, or have struggled, with the same things they do! I think there’s a perception that because I’m coach, I don’t mess up my diet, recovery or training. But, I’ve been through it all! As I’ve started having more phone calls with clients, I’ve realized that a lot of us are working through the same stuff. The monotony that can be training and tracking day in and day out during a revers...e. Wanting to enjoy yourself on the weekend when you’re dieting. No motivation to train, worrying about getting fat, having days where I hate my physique, etc. I’ve been there and still deal with some of those! I’ve just had the benefit of starting earlier than most and learning that not one bad day or week is going to make a huge difference over the course of years of training. You learn to take the bad with the good and keep showing up every day. It’s that consistently and putting in small deposits each day that compound over time. Just because you had one bad week of work outs or eating doesn’t mean the game is over! Move on and reset. You can’t change the fact that the rough times happened but you can control your reaction and how you move forward. Choose to push, learn and evolve. Life is a constant ebb and flow and you have to be able to flow with it. Look back to see how far you’ve come! Alexa started working with me just over a year ago! She was coming from another online coach who wouldn’t work around her busy life. Ultimately, we’ll be looking to get on stage at some point, but to get on stage is a process and Alexa has been more than willing to put in the work! It’s so easy to get caught up in the now. We see our physiques every day and it can be hard to see the changes that we’ve gone through. That’s why I ...always keep my client’s first pictures that they send me! That way, we can look back and go, see?! It’s only been a year, and look how much progress we’ve made?! Don’t discount the hard work that you’re putting in. Be consistent, do the work and the results will come! Going through an initial tracking phase, we had her starting macros at 110 protein / 200 carb / 65 fat. We did a reverse of 4-months, building up to 145/270/65, and only put on 4lbs without any weight being put on the waist. Was this easy for Alexa to go through? No, we all want to diet right away. But through our phone conversations we were able to talk about WHY we had to go through a small reverse first. A HARD 6-months of dieting with multiple diet breaks and frustrating weeks of stalled progress, Alexa was still able to drop nearly 20lbs and 3.5 off her waist. Plus, she has been able to go through just overall body recomp as she has built some muscle as well! Now we’re reversing slowly. We’re working our cardio down, increasing our food slowly and staying stable. It may seem like you haven’t made any progress but take the time to look back! These things take time!! When I started really focusing on wide grip pull ups earlier this year, I couldn’t even do 3 x 10 at body weight! But, I kept pushing, making sure form was perfect and I could do all of my sets and reps perfectly. I slowly started adding weight to a couple of sets over time as I got stronger and more efficient with the movement. 5lbs here, 5lbs there. Now we’re building up to nearly an extra 25lbs for multiple sets of 8-10 I know we all want to be THERE, right now, but building a physique and getting strong takes time. I didn’t workout all week and this happened! ...nothing! That’s what happened. I haven’t taken a week off in quite sometime and I did have the intention of working out while gone but, we got there and just stepping back from everything felt too good. So, I listened to what my body was telling me and didn’t lift the whole week. I watched how much I ate but still enjoyed myself. And just did some surfing and walking as my activity. Take the time to listen to your body and if you feel like you need a few days, take them! Let me brag for a moment! @ealexon71 has come a LONG way since we first started working together. She was one of first clients to trust me with a full on reverse and prep. In the last two seasons, that’s equated to a national qualification in her first NPC show in Miami last year, and then a 6th place finish at her first nationals! Oh, and did I mention she started prep last year, a full 3-months before there was an even a shut down? Oh, AND she works on the front l...ines in a major hospital, in Florida. Oh, AND she got COVID 4 weeks out. And to top it all off, peak week got a little interesting with Mother Nature showing up! To say the least, this has been a prep for the ages and she has pushed, and crushed, through every moment of it It’s pretty amazing to be able to coach athletes like these. PR alert!! What’s funny is that just a couple weeks ago, 365lbs was an rpe 9 but it was because I was out of the groove with my deadlift. I was over-thinking it after trying to correct some form issues. But it all came together again last week, and now hitting a number I’ve never hit with conventional deadlift! Probably an RPE 7.5-8 here for 2x4 and then some back off sets! Getting into a really good groove with my training these last couple of weeks. Size is coming on, strength is up and recovery is riding this as long as possible. Living that thick life! Sitting around 200-203lbs here, lifting x6 a week, eating about 3600 calories and just living life! I’m really not too sure when I’m going to compete again as I had originally planned for 2021 but with a little one on the way, that took a back seat. And to be honest, as of right now, I have 0 interest in competing. How do I even begin to describe the last 8-years, married? And the last 12-years of knowing each other? We were just kids when we met, who didn’t even know ourselves. But life’s an adventure and we’ve certainly been on one. Not only have we grown into ourselves, we’ve grown into each along the way. From travelling the world to just having a blast together with nothing to do, I wouldn’t trade a moment of this life with you. We’ve become partners, standing side by side, support...ing each other in everything we do. You believed in me when I wanted to quit a stable job for a chance to be happy and do what I love. You’ve stood by me through all of my anxiety and depression. You’ve been there, lock in step with me through everything. And I can already tell you that this life is far too short to come even close to how much time I want to spend with you. What a weekend for @kyky_vergs - (white shorts) This guy has been through an absolute grind of a prep! We started in early December, obviously not knowing what was about to hit us in just a few short months. But that didn’t stop him from continuing to push towards his goal. And being in the military, that meant he didn’t stop working either. He was routinely putting in 12-hour, hard shifts and looked after his squad. He had to be a leader while on minimal food and a lot of ca...rdio. And he also probably got real sick of me telling him he needed more than 5-6 hours of sleep a night! But through it all, he never complained and continually asked what he could do to be better. And in the end, it all paid off. Nationally qualified in his first ever competition I love watching my clients going through the struggle that is prep, and during a global pandemic nonetheless, and come out on the other side. To say that I am proud, humbled and inspired to work with athletes such as these is an understatement. Time to grind out a few more weeks and then it’s on to North Americans to experience a national stage! ‘The process.’ This is something that you’ll hear professional athletes talk about all of the time. ‘How’d you become so successful?’ It’s the process, the practice; doing the same shit that is going to make you successful, and doing that day in and day out, week after week, month after month, year after year. It isn’t sexy, it isn’t ‘fun’ all of the time and there’s no real secret to it. It’s just about putting in the work every day and falling in love with the work t...hat it takes to get you to where you want to be. And I’m sure it’s an expression and word that my client’s are tired of hearing from me! It’s something I repeat to them on a weekly basis. This is such a process what we’re trying to do. It takes months and years of hard work, hammering the basics, doing a lot of the same stuff while trying to continually motivate yourself to push yourself beyond what you did previously. I’ve probably had romanian deadlifts in my repertoire for hamstring training for at least the last 5-years. Why? Because I know it works and it’s a solid movement to get hip extension on. If it works, why would I stop? Sure, there are probably more fun exercises that I could be doing, or I could always be switching it up, but then I wouldn’t get the results that I want. Don’t let the work needed stop you from achieving that physique you’ve always wanted. You’ll be a helluva a lot more proud of it knowing how hard you’ve worked for it! How to get a skin splitting pump 101! Trying to find the right combination for an insane pump has been something that I’ve been experimenting with over the last few weeks, and it seems that I’ve finally seemed to have found it this morning! While a pump probably won’t make or break your training, it sure is a fun thing to train with! Who doesn’t like a few extra inches on their arms when it’s arm day?!?! So, how does one go about giving them the best chance to cat...ch an insane pump? Well, sodium and water, along with pre-work out carbs, are going to be your best friends! Because I work out in the morning, it can be a little tough to get enough sodium the traditional way (regular salt, sauces in my food) so thanks to @ryanconleypsa , he turned me onto these sodium/potassium tablets. They’re quick and easy to throw down before your workout! You can buy them off Amazon if you’re interested. So, here’s what I did broken down - - 40-60oz of water from wake to work out - 6 tablets @corenutritionals LOAD 20-30 min prior to pre work out meal to help get more carbs into the muscles for the work out. - 100-120 grams carbs about 30 minutes prior to work out (this is going to be dependant on your total carb intake) - Core FURY X pre work out (can also pair with core PUMP) - 5 tablets of sodium (around 1,000mg of sodium) about 20 minutes pre work out. - Warm up and get blood flow to the working muscles!! I like starting off with some light sets of 15-20 reps and then work on increasing the weight, dropping the reps as you get closer to your working weights. - Sip on water throughout the work out to keep the muscles hydrated and full! Remember, these are guidelines! This is what I’ve learned that works for ME, and this may not necessarily work for you but the principles of getting a pump still stand; water, sodium and carbs. Play with some of those variables with yourself and keep notes. Note what works and what doesn’t. Your body is your own experiment so have some fun with it and figure out what works best for you! If you want to be a better version of yourself, be prepared to get uncomfortable. Growth often forces us to visit parts of ourselves that we may not necessarily like, or enjoy exploring. We, or at least I do/did, viewed these parts as ‘bad’. But what I had to realize, through therapy, is that there’s no such thing as bad or good parts of ourselves. There’s always going to be a why for each part of us. Once you start digging into the why, that’s when we start to have revelatio...ns about ourself and those parts. We learn to accept these parts as we begin to understand them. That’s when true changes begins. It’s not easy to dig into the why though. It may unearth things that you’ve buried deep for years, or it’ll uncover hurts that you never knew you had in the first place. But once you’re on the path of accepting every part of yourself, you begin to understand on a different level of the choices you make and why.
