Winter is finally here and its time to get warm and cozy to prevent common seasonal illnesses like cold and flu. Its common knowledge that a healthy mouth does not only give you a brighter smile but also better overall health. Thats why it is of the utmost importance that you take special care of your oral health during these months when you are at a higher risk of falling sick. Here are a few dental care tips to help you stay healthy this winter and prevent several health... problems: Its a safe bet to regularly replace your toothbrush because old toothbrushes can accumulate germs and bacteria. This can result in a number of health problems, making it a priority to get a new toothbrush every three or four months. Even if the bristles still appear clean and new, its always safer to replace a toothbrush if youve been using it for a long time. After recovering from an illness, replace your toothbrush. This is especially important if you have been down with the flu or if you are just recovering from a cold. During your illness, you might have transmitted bacteria and germs from your mouth to your toothbrush. Using the same toothbrush would put you at a risk of getting infected again with the illness. Sanitizing your toothbrush and other oral health supplies is an effective way to keep yourself safe from cold and flu. This may include your toothbrush, tongue cleaner, or tools that aid you in flossing. During winter, it takes more time for your toothbrush to dry up after being used. This puts it at a risk of accumulating more germs that can impact your health. To disinfect and dry up a damp toothbrush, try popping it in the microwave for a minute. The heat will not only absorb the moisture from the brush but also kill harmful bacteria that can infect you. After brushing your teeth, rinse your mouth thoroughly with lukewarm saline water. This is an effective solution for disinfecting your mouth and killing germs that can accumulate and cause illnesses.
