A sincere thank you goes out to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for its grant that allowed us to purchase and retrofit two new wheelchair and stretcher-accessible vans. These vans are vital to our Specialized Transportation program, which helps seniors and adults with special needs receive affordable, accessible transportation to important medical appointments. Our Registered Dietitian Lauren Gogol was joined by members of the United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes today to pack and distribute 200 bags of food as part of the organizations’ joint Garden at Your Table program. About half of the bags will be sent to social housing, a small number will go to the OEYC City of Kawartha Lakes & Haliburton County, and the remainder will go to CCCKL clients. The special holiday food drops featured fresh produce, stuffing, gravy and a recipe booklet to use it all. They also include shortbread and hot chocolate from Corner Bites Eatery, and those bags going to families featured a pack of art supplies from Crayola Canada. Thank you to all those who helped make this special program happen around the holidays!

The Community Care Connections program is held twice monthly and offers an opportunity to connect with your community through various fun activities. It is with a heavy heart that we must announce the cancellation of our cherished fundraising event, Handbags for Hospice, which was set to take place January 2021. Though we wish that we could enjoy a night of friendship, fashion and fundraising, we must be diligent in following the government COVID-19 restrictions and recommendations. Please know that this decision was not easy to make but the safety of our staff, volunteers and guests is our top priority. We thank everyone for their support and look forward to Handbags for Hospice returning in 2022, even bigger and better than before!

Last week, we had some very special guests from 100 Kids Who Care Kawartha Lakes help deliver meals to clients of our Meals on Wheels Program! 100 Kids Who Care KL launched their Kindness Cards Campaign fundraiser this week, with all funds raised going to Meals on Wheels. The Kindness Card Campaign encourages children to create a card for a senior in our community to receive with their Meals on Wheels delivery.
