What a great Monday Motivational story.
"Many non-speaking Autistic people learn and understand language differently from speaking people. When speaking people put all of the responsibility onto the n...on-speaker for communicating in a way the speaking person understands, or they do not fully accommodate the non-verbal communication methods of the non-speaking person, it creates inequality in communication between the speaking person and the person who communicates non-verbally. When I don’t do well enough decoding speaking peoples language or translating my thoughts and vocabulary in a way the speaking person understands, or I do not type or sign quickly enough, I become invisible. I don’t get heard and I am not understood. Most of the time I am only able to decode and understand bits of what people say and then have to put the bits together and guess what they mean. This takes time. I find it extra difficult when speaking people don’t use the grammar I have learnt, have a very strong accent or pronounce words differently from what I was taught. These things make it more difficult because it takes away many of the clues I have learnt and rely on to decode what is said to me. When these differences in language and how a person communicates happen, and they are not accommodated by the speaking person, the conversation rushes ahead of me and I miss out on the opportunity to be an active part of it".

The day has finally arrived and she got to bring home her new roommate. Dreams do come true.

"I am 'JUST' a support worker." "I am 'JUST' a DSP." Don't 'JUST' yourself.... Being a direct support professional is cool because, in essence, you are paid to be human. Paid to explore the commonalities of the human condition. Paid to discover the incredible diversity of the human spirit. Paid to spend your day doing something that matters, something that makes a difference, something that you can be proud of. Done right, you have chosen both a job and a passion, both a passion and a mission, both a mission and a purpose. There are those who spend their lives looking for purpose. You will rise to it each morning. And that's a hell of a way to start the day. Dave Hingsburger | Open Future Learning

An important reminder.
The community garden at Franklin Centre is a labour of love. It was designed, built and now facilitated by CLC staff for our community families and group homes. Jonathan and Joanne built the garden itself and the residential folks planted it over the course of the last two months. It went from a random patch of grass to a beautiful, peaceful place to come and enjoy. The vegetable garden has been planted with corn, two types of squash, beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, pumpkins, ...watermelon and peppers. There is also an herb and sensory garden. In this garden you are able to engage all five of your senses . There is therapeutic moss to walk on in bare feet, and there are herbs to touch and to eat. There are flowers, sunflowers, wind chimes, a bug and butterfly house, hummingbird feeders, and everyone's favourite, a "sensitive plant' which you'll have to come and see for yourself why it gets its' name.
