Did you know that the first BIA was launched 50 years ago in Bloor West Village? The late 60s and early 70s saw the growth of shopping malls and the subway extension. As a result, street retailers saw a decline in business. This promoted a group of business owners along Bloor Street West, to go to City Hall and the Province seeking legislation that would compel businesses within a designated area to pay a levy for the purpose of revitalizing their business strip through physical improvements and promotional activities. Today we are proud that a Toronto initiative has been adopted in the U.S., the U.K., Germany, South Africa, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
