Today's featured ambassador is Laura Calovini. Read about her thoughts on sport below! "Having CP has totally impacted my sports life in such a positive way. W...ithout my disability I would not have discovered para sports. Growing up I took part in able-bodied sports, but I never felt truly accepted or included because of my disability. Coaches didn’t really know how to deal with my disability, so I didn’t feel like I progressed. Thankfully, CP brought me to para-athletics! Being a hemi-girl means sometimes having to find different ways of doing things but that does not mean something cannot be done and being surrounded by coaches and people that believe that too, is just amazing. I think having CP makes me a strong person in general, it makes me have to problem solve and overcome obstacles as well as work physically harder to do just about everything. It builds character! Being involved in sports has helped me grow and taught me many life lessons. Self advocating is a big one. Through sports I have become more independent and improved my confidence as a person with a disability. Through sport I have also made friendships with amazing teammates and coaches that will last forever. Being a para athlete has given me an entry into the world of competitive sport that I did not know existed. I get to compete, actually compete and measure myself against other athletes with disabilities just like mine. There are no participation awards, you need to train hard and earn a place on every team and to work for every medal. Para-Athletics has given me the chance to travel, to go to different competitions and training camps as well as meet and learn from so many amazing athletes and coaches. I love taking part in World CP Day, it gives me a chance to connect with people around the world and their stories and to celebrate how great our community is. I hope sharing my experiences with Para Sports encourages others to get involved either as an athlete or a coach, there is so much there just waiting for you!" #athletics #parasport #worldcpday . I have CP, but never let it define me. I see the chair only as my legs, & appreciate when others do the same. When I'm treated equally, you see my confidence shine. I have a lot to offer society when given the chance. Limitations make me adapt, but I will achieve any goal I set out to do. In 2017, I started playing Boccia consistently & it didn't take long before I wanted to excel competitively. In 2019, I achieved representing on Team Ontario. World CP Day is officially over but a lot was accomplished this year in Canada! There was activation from coast to coast: https://ccpsa.ca/cerebral-palsy/world-cerebral-palsy-day/ Landmarks were lit up in green across BC including BC Place Stadium. Other NSOs joined in on the fun including Canada Soccer and Athletics Canada. Apparel was distributed to all Provincial Sport Organizations. The PSOs posted photos of members wearing their apparel in the lead up to an...d after World CP Day. SportAbility, AQSPC Sports pour paralytiques cérébraux, The Alberta Cerebral Palsy Sports Association, and Easter Seals NL participated. Activation was so widespread that we extended our World CP Day celebration into November. CCPSA recognition from World CP Day on social media for the work that was done WAY. TO. GO. . . . La Journée mondiale de la paralysie cérébrale est officiellement terminée, mais plusieurs réalisations ont été faites cette année au Canada ! Les choses ont bougé travers le Canada: https://fr.ccpsa.ca//la-journee-mondiale-de-la-paralysie-/ Des monuments ont été illuminés en vert dans toute la Colombie-Britannique, y compris le BC Place Stadium. D’autres organismes nationaux de sport se sont joints à nous, dont Canada Soccer et Athlétisme Canada. Des vêtements ont été distribués à tous les organismes provinciaux de sport. Ceux-ci ont publié des photos de leurs membres portant ces vêtements avant et après la Journée mondiale de la PC. SportAbility, AQSPC Sports pour paralytiques cérébraux, The Alberta Cerebral Palsy Sports Association, et Easter Seals NL ont participé. L’engouement était si répandu que nous avons prolongé notre célébration de la Journée mondiale de la PC jusqu’en novembre.
