The exhibition 'Slice: Biodigital Jewellery by Paul McLure' is on for one more week at the Craft Ontario Gallery! "Slice alludes to the method by which computer models form, virtually slicing them into thousands of cross-sections that the 3D printer then builds layer upon layer, slice by slice. Following my residency, I transformed the components made through digital technologies by using time-honoured jewellery techniques carving, forming, fabricating and finishing. My con...ceptual development continues to express an intentional melding of digital and analogue making that reflects my interest in biology, pathology, additive manufacturing technologies and traditional jewellery methodologies." - Paul McLure https://buff.ly/2QxV9Hc - for more information. Visit the Craft Ontario Shop from October 23rd to November 12th to see the delicate sculptural jewellery and bud vases of Adam Dunn! Says Adam about his jewellery: "Working in woods, coloured resin, and stained porcelain, I intended each piece to make a statement with its bold geometry and beautiful surfaces. Although my pieces are objects unto themselves, the completion of my work occurs only when it is worn, when it is handled, and when it is set as both contrasting and ...complementary forms against the surfaces and shapes of the human body. Each object is handcrafted by myself and finished to a demanding standard. All wood used in this line comes from reclaimed offcuts donated by furniture and instrument makers that I work alongside at my studio." Inspired by Octavia Butlers evocative novel, this space aims to be fertile ground for Black creativity and organizing. Wildseed is an anchor point for Black activism, art, artivism, education, collaboration, and community-building. We recognize that space is political and Black. Space. Matters. That this space was missing meant that so many of the vital Black projects that have contributed to what is central to Torontos culture today have been transitory and temporary in nature. Wildseed is a transformed industrial space, a blank shell, reimagined as a multipurpose artist space, with gallery walls, sprung floors, and shared working spaces. Wildseed was birthed by Black Lives Matter activists and artists who recognized the need to build an enduring space that could cultivate the most transformative and radical ideas from Torontos diverse Black communities. Opened on March 7, 2020, days before the eventual pandemic closure, Wildseed is being reimagined to continue supporting Black community in ways that are accessible, transformative, and healing. Wildseed is a visionfor a Black affirming Toronto. --- Feature: https://canadianart.ca//black-lives-matter-launches-art-a/

October 22 - November 14, 2020 Reception: TBC Craft Ontario Gallery, 1106 Queen Street West, Toronto Responding to the current era of rapid and accelerating change to the landscape, Mass Wasting explores the impact(s) of environmental destabilization through the lens of craft practice.... Through both direct and indirect human intervention, the form of the Earth is changing. Extractive mining practices and deforestation have immediate and obvious effects, while warming temperatures are causing unprecedented thawing of permafrost. The term mass wasting refers to the geomorphic process by which rocks and soil move downhill (eg. rock slides, soil creep and thaw slumps). Mass wasting is both cause and effect: the means by which we have arrived on this increasingly unstable ground. This exhibition aims to address the psychic, social, cultural, and political impact of environmental unpredictability as identified by artists working in diverse craft media. It also considers the ways in which instability can open up fissures of possibility opportunities for change and innovation. Pauojoungie Saggiaks print entitled First Catch typifies the graphic quality and style of his stonecut prints. A stonecut print is created by carving away areas that are not to appear in a print from a block of stone, leaving the uncut raised areas to be inked. You read that right, A BLOCK OF STONE. Dear friends, family and community supporters, Not too long ago in 2017, we, Paperhouse Studio, found ourselves in a tricky situation in which we could not affo...rd to stay in our beloved studio home without finding someone to share the space with. We were lucky enough to find a sub-leaser in a short timeframe and have been sharing the space with until now. Our studio mate has recently told us that, due to the financial strain caused by COVID-19, they are giving their notice. So here we are again, reaching out to the community to find a sub-leaser! We are looking for an individual, collective, and/or organization to share our beautiful 1100 sq. ft. space. An ideal candidate would be interested in sharing an open concept studio that can convert into both wet and dry use and have a similar mandate in collaboration, community programming, and/or the arts. The room comes equipped with great facilities, including a wash out area, work tables, storage shelf, and more. We are open to creative ways of sharing the space. Leasing would begin December 1st 2020, negotiable. $1381/month plus shared utilities and internet. Paperhouse is taking 2 months (until November 1st 2020) to find a sub-leaser and at that point if we do not find a suitable one, we will be forced to give notice for re-location. We are committed to the vision of Paperhouse, so, we will continue to explore all possible action plans. Our preference is to stay at Artscape Youngplace, so we could really use the power of our community to help us make this happen! Please share with any organizations / collectives / individuals who you think would be a great fit and interested. To see a breakdown of facilities available, please view this PDF here or Word Doc here. More information or to book a viewing, contact [email protected]. Emails are preferred at this time as we continue any administrative work remotely, coming into the studio for only studio necessitated activities. Phone calls and/or in person viewing will be organized via email, all interested parties will be required to adhere to COVID safe protocols. Warmly, Flora and Emily Co-directors, Paperhouse Studio [email protected] | [email protected] https://paperhousestudio.com/share-our-space/

Visit the Craft Ontario Shop before October 1st to see a feature of Jeremy Gawen's work. This collection includes a variety of hand-formed trays and turned bowls in olive wood, maple, red elm, and walnut, all treated with a food-safe finish. We're also showcasing Jeremy's hand-made wooden toy train, perfect for a young one, or one who is young of heart! In Jeremy's words: "For me, the pleasure of woodturning is to bring out the beauty of the wood just as much as the shape of ...the finished product. I like to work with old, degraded burled woods and, so often, I will start with a piece with no discernible beauty and then discover, as the turning takes shape, the most amazing natural patterns, holes and crevices which add immensely to the finished bowl. It is, so often, a true voyage of discovery!" You can also see a selection of Jeremy's work on our online shop, https://buff.ly/32B2Mn5!
