Creative Custom Canes

The original concept of my work was to create canes and staffs as custom pieces of personal art. However, people's imaginations don't necessarily line up with the reality that these pieces would be sculpted with wood. Some ideas would make the walking aid far too fragile, thereby unrealistic. So, I've concluded the best way to go is just go ahead and sculpt. Create what I think would be appropriate and stylish, pieces that would express character. Then when they are completed... I'll post photos. I can't disappoint people who have an idea which isn't practical, as they really would like their idea to happen. If I tell them it can't really happen, they are hurt. I won't do that. So, a change of plan and a change in how my services will be offered. In other words, the "custom" reference is basically out of here. If someone's idea is actually practical, then proceeding with that idea is fine. Some ideas would work and stand up to every day use. If that's the case we could proceed. Be creative people, it's in you and it's worth pursuing. See more

I've been VERY busy working in my career of 47 years, so sculpting has had to take a back seat. Well, a fairly large chunk of time is going to open up allowing me the time required to get back into creating piles of wood chips and saw dust. I've accumulated a LOT of hard wood stock mostly from western Canada's fruit belt (Okanogan valley) and Vancouver Island. I have Cherry, Apple, Plum, Yew, and a few others which are anxiously awaiting to be changed from bark covered logs into something people would feel proud to walk with. I'm looking forward to having the freedom of time, finally, to get busy on this endeavour. Hopefully I'll be able create a small stock of finished pieces to offer.

Now I have a new heater installed in my work shop, FINALLY!!! I've been busy working on a ballet, an opera, now another ballet, then the Inspire awards (indigenous peoples televised award show). Once this busy time is completed I intend to make my workshop come back to sanity, set up my painting area (airbrush & 2-D artwork area) and get my equipment ready to make lots of wood chips and saw dust from sculpting staffs. I intend to sculpt a couple of canes as well, but concentrating on staffs will be number one. People don't commonly use a staff for walking, but I find them a lot easier to handle and more comfortable to walk with than canes.

Hello world, I am FINALLY going to have a new source of heat installed into my work shop. Once that happens, I'll get back into sculpting. However, I hope people aren't very disappointed, I'm changing tactics. Some people who imagined a cane for themselves have had some really wild ideas, which is okay, but I work with hard wood not metal. What they requested would have to be metal to survive. Their idea in wood would be far too fragile and would not last long. I've been VERY... BUSY working in theatrical production and high rigging & consulting for a huge installation in Calgary. No time for sculpting last summer. So, after I have a new source of heat, and finish working an opera and two ballets, I'll spend a ton of time creating new pieces to offer. Women establish their "look", upholding their personal "style". Many have been involved in sport and many have worked hard in life, becoming injured and requiring a walking aid. I don't believe their look should have to be inhibited with an aluminum walking aid that has no style statement. I hope to offer something special to compliment their character. A walking aid to "enhance" their style, opposite of diminishing their style with factory made common ordinary run of the mill walking aids. She is a special person who deserves to feel special in her presentation.

I'll admit, I became disheartened. The heat in my work space died, so last winter it became colder inside than it was outside. I abandoned the sculpting effort. Now however, it's spring and warmth is coming with it. I've collected many nice pieces of natural hard wood over the past few years, now it's time to see what I can create from them. I hope to make a large pile of saw dust and wood chips over the next while.
