#COVID19 has had a significant impact on arts and culture organizations across Nova Scotia. That’s why the province is providing $2.1 million to help meet their... immediate needs. The COVID-19 Emergency Support Program for Arts and Culture Organizations is a one-time, application-based program to help organizations who either receive Communities, Culture, and Heritage operating funding or who regularly receive project funding from the department. Criteria for funding will be based on need, and year-over-year financials and projections. Financial assistance will be considered for plans that keep operations going, adapt spaces, and/or generate activity under the current public health guidelines. Organizations can apply online: https://novascotia.ca//emergency-support-for-arts-and-cult The application deadline is Monday, December 7, 2020

As Mi'kmaq, we recognize the importance of plants to our health, wellbeing and spirituality. Certain plants, including sweetgrass, cedar, sage, and tobacco, are... used in ceremonies for cleansing and purifying purposes. When smudging, one or more of these plants are lit to create sacred smoke. Teachings tell us that the smoke attaches itself to negative energy and carries it away. In this video, Mi'kmaw Elder Doreen Bernard spends her time teaching the meaning and value of the four sacred medicines to eager students like Mi'kmaw botanist Cheyenne MacDonald. The Committee would like to acknowledge funding from Support4Culture and Nova Scotia Government for the creation of this video. Video by FPS (Filet Production Services Inc.) Having access to nutritious food has never been more important. One way government is helping Nova Scotians is by investing more than $134,000 through the Commu...nity Food Literacy and Access Fund to help improve access to affordable and healthy food while building food literacy. So far this year, the fund is supporting 39 programs including the Bay St Lawrence Community Centre which is receiving $3,000 for its orchard expansion and the Saint George's YouthNet which is receiving $3,500 for its weekly food baskets. Other community organizations will receive funding for programs that include food accessibility, meal planning, food education, budgeting skills, and community garden building and maintenance. "There may have been no sitting audiences in the island’s concert halls last week but thousands were online watching Celtic Colours International Festival."
