The chickens are growing very well and seem to love being able to wander outdoors now that it is not so cold for them in the evening! They will be ready for pickup on July 25th, so if anyone is wanting chickens please email us as soon as possible. They will be approximately 6-7lbs each, they come whole fresh not frozen. Let us know!

For the first 2-3wks the chicks are fed Chick Starter-Grower medicated with Amprolium which aids in the prevention of coccidiosis. This feed is supplied by Masterfeeds or Shur-gain. Coccidiosis is a bacteria found in the feces of all birds and other animals such as sheep, goats etc. It is very easy for the chicks to get infected with this bacteria as they are very curious always pecking the bedding in the shed and inevitably no matter how clean we keep them they will come in ...contact with feces. Amprolium is not an antibiotic! If the chicks were to show signs of coccidiosis they would have to be treated with antibiotics. Allowing them to build an immunity to this bacteria during the first 2-3wks on the medicated feed is the whole purpose of amprolium. Then at 4wks of age the chicks go on what we call a Chick-mix which is a mixture of small grains grown locally here in the North Gower area and processed into Chick-Mix by our local feed store. If you want to know further information about medicated feed and why it is fed there is a great video you can check out at, http://scoopfromthecoop.nutrenaworld.com//amprolium-for-c/ See more

The chickens arrived on May 15th and spent the first 10 days in a camping tent, inside the shed! This kept them nice and warm as it helped keep the wind off them as the shed is a little drafty!! We have done well as the rule goes you get 100 chicks and you usually lose about 15, well last year we had a 100 and only lost 4 and so far this year we only have lost 3 chicks, out of 150 so I think we got something right going here!

Our beef is a cross-bred of Peidmontese and Angus. The reason for this choice of breeds in our beef animals, is due to the qualities they produce in the end product. Angus is a very popular breed of beef and has nice marbling traits. Marbling is another word for "fat" that is throughout the red meat or muscle. This provides the meat with a nice flavour and lots of juiciness. However what are the health benefits to this....? We have done some research on finding health benefi...Continue reading
