File # 20-56583 Grandparent Scam Kelowna RCMP is cautioning the general public following reports of the Emergency Scam, otherwise known as the Grandparent Scam, surfacing in the Central Okanagan. In September 2020, a local Kelowna resident answered a fraudulent telephone call from Quebec, on the other end of the line was someone claiming to be a lawyer. While on the phone, a man could be heard crying in the background as the lawyer explained that the victim’s son had been in... a motor vehicle collision and that the victim had to send bail money to the lawyer on their son’s behalf to get him out of police custody. The victim attended a local bank and deposited a large sum of cash into a numbered bank account provided by the lawyer. Following the deposit, the lawyer requested further funds for damages caused to a photo radar device during the collision. The victim followed the instructions and deposited further funds into the account, but by this time the victim was growing increasingly concerned regarding her son. Later that day, the victim spoke with their son and confirmed that he was safe and sound. The investigation into the fraud remains ongoing. This was an unfortunate situation of scammers using an emotional plea to take advantage of a parent’s concern for their child and exploit it to their advantage, states Cst. Solana Paré, spokesperson for the Kelowna Regional Detachment. The Kelowna RCMP has since received further reports from citizens who received calls of similar nature who took the precautionary measure to call and confirm the call was a scam. Follow this advice if confronted with this scam or others: Watch out for urgent pleas that play on your emotions. If you have any doubts, simply end the conversation; If you have received a call or contact from someone claiming a family member is in trouble, talk to other family members to confirm the situation; Never send cash, gift cards or money transfers as payment to an unknown recipient. A West Kelowna man now faces a number of criminal charges after being arrested twice in a span of just 6 days. On October 3, 2020 just after 4:00 a.m., a member of the West Kelowna RCMP Community Safety Unit located a vehicle on Julien Road in West Kelowna, which had just been reported stolen. The driver, 31-year-old West Kelowna resident Bryce Williamson, was taken into police custody without incident. During his investigation, the officer determined that Williamson was al...so prohibited from driving a motor vehicle. He was brought before the courts and subsequently released on conditions for a future court date. On October 9, 2020 the Target Team of the Kelowna RCMP Street Enforcement Unit spotted a brown Chevrolet pickup truck with an inactive licence plate. Target Team officers followed the vehicle to a residence in the 500-block of Radant Road in Kelowna where they performed a traffic stop. During that interaction, they also ran police checks on the dirt bike that had been in the vehicle and learned it had been reported stolen to police on September 30, 2020 in Penticton. The driver of the truck, who was identified as Bryce Williamson, was once again arrested. During a subsequent search investigators seized tools, an air soft gun and what police believe to be illicit drugs, all of which he allegedly possessed contrary to court orders he is currently under. Further, he was determined to still be a prohibited driver. The BC Prosecution Service has approved several charges including theft of a motor vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, possession of stolen property, Driving while prohibited, failure to comply with a release order and breach of probation. On October 10, 2020 Bryce Williamson was denied bail and has been remanded in custody. He will next appear in Kelowna Provincial Court on October 26, 2020 As the matters are now before the court no further information will be released. Released by: Cpl. Kelowna RCMP is asking the public’s help to identify these three suspects who continue to vandalize our community. "AWKWRD" has been linked to roughly 300 tags to various structures throughout the Kelowna area. "SOJA" has been active in the downtown core, with more than 300 incidents over the summer. "SOCIAL" has tagged numerous public and private properties throughout Kelowna.... These types of crimes are often discounted by the public as nuisance issues, says Cpl Jocelyn Noseworthy of the Kelowna RCMP. But the reality is this isn’t a victimless crime. Vandalism such as this takes away from the beauty of our city, and it encourages other criminal behaviour. Anyone with any information about this crime can contact the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300. Or remain completely anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or by leaving a tip online at www.crimestoppers.net.

A yet to be identified suspect behind the wheel of a passenger car, which failed to stop for police in downtown Kelowna, allegedly caused a chain reaction hit and run collision, which involved a total of five vehicles. On October 8, 2020 just after 6:30 p.m., a front line Kelowna RCMP officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop with a black Chevrolet Malibu on Harvey Avenue. The suspect vehicle failed to stop for the officer and fled onto Water Street. Given the dangerous man...ner in which the vehicle was being driven, the police officer did not pursue. The suspect vehicle was last seen heading down Leon Avenue at a high rate of speed. The suspect vehicle collided with a Ford F150 pickup truck at the intersection of Bertram Street and Leon Avenue. The force of the impact caused the Malibu to further collide with several parked vehicles and a light standard. The driver and sole occupant of the Malibu fled the scene on foot. Officers arrived on the scene soon after the crash and immediately rendered assistance to the driver and passenger of the F150 pickup. Fortunately the man and woman, who had been visiting Kelowna from the West Kootenay’s, were relatively uninjured. An extensive search of the area was conducted, however the hit and run suspect was not located. RCMP has seized the suspect vehicle, which was towed from the scene and remains part of the ongoing criminal investigation. This driver unnecessarily put everyone in the area at risk with his dangerous behaviour, says Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy, spokeswoman for the Kelowna RCMP. Looking at the amount of damage caused to the vehicles involved, it is extremely fortunate that no one was seriously injured or even killed in this collision. RCMP is appealing to anyone who may have dash camera footage or video surveillance footage, of the area which shows the suspect vehicle prior to the crash, during the crash or captures the suspect fleeing on foot following the collision to come forward. If you witnessed this hit and run crash and have not yet spoken to police you are asked to call the Kelowna RCMP at 250-250-762-3300. Or remain completely anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or by leaving a tip online at www.crimestoppers.net. File 2020-63081 Released by: Cpl.
