In the halls and corridors of Quebec justice, Montreal lawyer Michael N. Bergman is an all too often unheralded icon. http://www.montrealgazette.com/schukov+legal+i//story.html

Special Committee for Canadian Unity Chairman Keith Henderson expressed his disappointment today that Chief Justice of the Quebec Superior Court, Jacques R. Fournier found it necessary to postpone hearings into Bill 99 scheduled to begin Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2016. The hearings have been on the books for quite some time, Mr. Henderson said. We were aware of the dates; so was the Société St. Jean Baptiste which sought intervenor status only ten days ago. Justice Corriveau wh...o denied the Société the right to intervene partly on the grounds that the intervention was received at the ‘25th hour’ was herself evidently aware of the proposed court schedule. We’re not sure exactly why the hearings were postponed. Perhaps the Chief Justice was unable to secure a judge sufficiently bilingual and well-versed in the subject matter to hear the case at the designated time. Perhaps the Master of the Rolls made an error. In any event, a case that has long lingered will now linger some more, maybe to as late as February or March of 2017. The only silver lining is that arguments will likely now be heard during the 150th year of Canada’s Confederation, turning the challenge to Bill 99 into a symbolic case for a symbolic time.
