when I painted this back in 2015, I was on the TTC for 2 hours a day (at the very least), so naturally, I had a lot of time to think and observe... and a lot of rides to collect those bus transfers you see that make up the background. In those many hours of public transit adventures I often experienced sonder. Sonder is a profound feeling you get when you realize that everyone around you has a life as vivid and complex as your own. That cleaning lady you see to your left coul...d have saved a life once and you wouldn’t know. Or, that business man to your right might be struggling because he doesn’t have enough time for his family. When you think of all of the memories that you have to share with others, it’s overwhelming to think that the millions of strangers you cross paths with in your lifetime have just as many (if not more) stories and experiences to tell. And, with never ending stories come never ending questions and things to learn! But it also comes to show that you don’t know what the people next to you are going through or have been through. So to that I say, be safe and considerate because everyone around you has a story. See more
for the past couple of days I have been working on this small project for an empty wall in my bedroom. I came up with these three drawings inspired by the paintings one can find on tiles (azulejos) as well as the hand-painted blue and white porcelain plates, cups, vases (the list goes on) that you can find in a typical portuguese home. Although it has become sort of a national symbol to Portugal, these porcelain pieces actually originated in China! You can find different ver...sions of this blue and white porcelain painted around the worldfrom China, the Netherlands, England etc. I’ve also attached a photo of a building I saw in Ponte de Lima, Portugal which shows the type of azulejos I am referring to. Each of these designs is taken from a photo that I took and all three are meaningful locations to me. What are your thoughts on this? And do you have some of this pottery in your home? I know I have LOTS of it

In 1961 San Basilio de Palenque became the first free town in the Americas. The Palenqueros and Palenqueras who ruled the town were runaway African Slaves. Since they were cut off from society, they had very limited resources. What they did have a lot of, was fruit. So, the Palenqueras would make their long journey by foot all the way to Cartagena to sell their fruit in the city to make a living. Today, they are a historical and cultural symbol of Colombia, representing str...ong, courageous black women and the fight against oppression. The beautiful reference photo used was taken by @ elarmariodelanena on IG Music: Morning Musician: LiQWYD

PALENQUERA 48 by 60 This has been the hardest post to caption because I don’t really know how to capture the beauty behind this piece in words to do it justice. These beautiful women are known as a symbol of Cartagena, Colombia, I recommend doing a quick google search to learn about their history ... The reference photo I used was taken by @elarmariodelanena who captured this beautiful Palenquera in the perfect composition for this piece. This is by far the biggest painting I’ve done to date (there’s a photo with me in it for size reference). Such a great experience overall!!
