Culture Alliance in the Heart of Georgian Bay 29.01.2021

We are looking for new or existing works that demonstrate your response to COVID-19 and the ways that you have been able to stay connected despite the isolation... and fear that have come as a result of a global pandemic. We are looking for works of art that demonstrate slivers of hope in times of fear and uncertainty. Works in all media will be considered for our online exhibition, including sculpture, performance, video, sound, installation, painting, drawing and new media. We would like to thank the Town of Midland for their ongoing support of this project. Please have all submissions sent to [email protected] by end of day February 15, 2021. Submissions must be in jpg format and include: title, date, medium and measurements in inches (h x w) https://www.facebook.com/QuestArtMidland/posts/3941050275949251

September 30, 2020, is recognized as Orange Shirt Day. Orange Shirt Day is a day where we honour the Indigenous children who were sent to residential schools. O...range Shirt Day is also a day to promote awareness about the history of Residential Schools. "Imagine being taken from your parents at the age of five. Being given a number instead of a name, being punished for speaking the only language you know. Being taken from your family. Imagine being a parent and being threatened to be arrested if you didn’t give up your children. Aboriginal children were torn from their families and culture. They were forbidden to speak their native language and suffered severe mental and physical punishment, described as killing the Indian in the child. Today we wear our orange shirts to honour our Anishinabe men and women who were innocent boys and girls, taken from their families and forced in residential schools to be robbed of culture, identity and spirits. This orange shirt is for those who did not survive. This is for our people who continue to experience the intergenerational trauma and effects of these institutions. In honour of residential school survivors and in memory of those who did not" Joscelyn Jamieson, 2019. I have created a video of the art submissions for Orange Shirt Day. Thank you to Jayne Monague, Melinda Copegog, Bruce Sandy and the students of the Christian Island Elementary School for all the creative pieces you have sent in. The art is put on display at the Beausoleil First Nation Social Services building, and this video is available for your enjoyment in a socially distant format G' Chi-Miigwetch for wearing your orange shirts to remember those who were sent to residential schools, and those who never made it home.
