The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) with municipal partners and K'omoks First Nation, are undertaking a Regional Active Transportation Network Plan. The Plan will identify priority areas and routes for investment in active transportation infrastructure. The CVRD received funding for this project from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and would like to thank the Province for this support. "A key goal of the plan is to improve connections between municipal areas and rural areas in order to create opportunities that will encourage residents to use active transportation on their daily trips - to work, to school, to shop, and to recreate, explains Alana Mullaly, Senior Manager of Sustainability and Regional Growth Strategy. We want to ensure that safe and accessible transportation options are available for all residents regardless of their age, ability, or income as well as provide options to help reduce our community’s greenhouse gas emissions. Active transportation has many advantages including improved health, a lower environmental footprint, greater affordability, and social benefits on both a personal and community level. Active transportation includes: Walking (including people walking with service dogs, people jogging, and people using mobility devices such as wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers). Cycling (including the use of pedal assist e-bikes, bicycle trailers). Rolling (skateboarding, in-line skating). Other emerging modes such as electric unicycles or other personal mobility technologies

Why Reduce Poverty? Poverty is a major contributor to many other community challenges. By supporting and enabling more affordable housing options, better access to transportation, healthy and affordable foods, employment opportunities, and supports to transition out of poverty into the workforce, local governments and community organizations can start to not only alleviate the impacts of poverty, but begin to reduce overall poverty locally. The Importance of Community Voices - Whether You Experience Poverty or Not We're looking for stories and experiences from all people within the Comox Valley - whether you feel as though you experience poverty or not. This broad collection of voices will help us to understand the types of community supports needed within our region. When we plan to enhance social programs and services, everyone can lead more healthy and vibrant lives. Priority Areas for the Comox Valley Our community engagement and research will focus on these seven priority areas (more details on our engagement program can be found below): Housing Families, children and youth Income supports Social supports Food security Multi-modal transportation Social inclusion (e.g. access for all ages and abilities)
