It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Garry Callison, who passed away February 12, 2021 at 83 years of age. Garry Callison was the founder of Callison Zeunert Law Corporation, and retired as the Peace Region’s most experienced lawyer in 2015. A pioneer and long-term resident of the North, Garry was born in Fort St. John, British Columbia in 1937. He studied history in Oregon State, and Law at the University of British Columbia. He became a member of the Br...itish Columbia Law Society in 1963. Garry kept himself busy for over 50 years practicing in Corporate/Commercial, Real Estate and Wills & Estates law. He was awarded the distinction of Queen’s Counsel in 1995, by the Right Honorable Kim Campbell, former Prime Minister of Canada. We will truly miss his guidance, kind heart, wisdom and crib games. Our third featured legal resource is the North Peace Justice Society! "North Peace Justice Society’s mission is to foster a safe and caring environment, by administering the Restorative Justice Program when a crime has been committed or disputes have occurred. With treatment of dignity and respect for all, the restorative justice process will be used to bring together the offender, victim, supporters and any other affected community member to collectively decide on meaningful... reparations for the harm that has been done. The Society strives to be a reputable and vital resource for crime prevention in Fort St. John and the North Peace area." The North Peace Justice Society runs three main programs, Restorative Justice, Community Justice Forums and the Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth (P.A.R.T.Y.) Program. Restorative Justice is a view of justice that emphasizes repairing the harm caused by conflict and crime. The Restorative Justice Program is an alternative to the formal Court process for certain criminal offences as well as an option for resolution of civil disputes. The program follows the RCMP model of community justice forums (CJF). The Community Justice Forum (CJF) is a safe, controlled environment in which the person(s) who caused the harm, the person(s) harmed and their families or supporters are brought together under the guidance of a trained facilitator. This is usually done in a circle formation so all participants can see each other and direct conversation to the entire group. The North Peace Justice Society's CJF programming can be accessed by any and all members of the North Peace by contacting the NPJS directly, there is no need for an RCMP referral. The P.A.R.T.Y. Program is a one-day injury awareness and prevention program for youth age 15 and older. Developed in 1986 at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, this program is a vital component of the growing community effort to reduce death and injury in alcohol, drug and risk-related crashes and incidents. The North Peace Justice Society also runs Restorative Justice Facilitator Training and an online Restorative Justice program! It’s a great way to learn about topics such as Canadian Criminal Justice, victims of crime rights and restorative justice. Meet Tyler! Tyler Holte grew up near the small town of Amisk, Alberta.
