People who are recognized as refugees are allowed to stay in Canada and may apply for permanent residence status, and eventually may apply to become Canadian citizens. Former workers, students, and visitors whose status expired after January 30, 2020, and who remained in Canada will now have until December 31, 2020, to apply to restore their status, provided they meet the requirements for the type of status and authorization they are applying to restore.

Canada is making the Open Work Permit Pilot (OWPP) a permanent program, so the spouses and common-law partners of Canadians can continue to work while waiting on their permanent resident status. The program began in December 2014, and was set to expire on July 31 after its most recent extension. Instead of setting another expiry date, Canada is now extending the program until the regulatory changes have been completed to implement the pilot as permanent policy.

A PGWP can only be extended under specific circumstances. If you did not receive a work permit for the full amount of time you were eligible for due to the expiry of your passport, you may need to apply to extend using your new passport. (1/2) :::IRCC
