Very true, both for the services I offer as a lawyer and when I need to hire someone to do what I cannot! Like a deck...!
A lovely surprise on a cold Monday. Thank you!!
Very proud of my associate, Anny Wang, who won a difficult trial in front of a tough judge yesterday. Her client was so happy with the verdict - NOT GUILTY - that he literally fell over in the courtroom. She rocked it! Congrats Anny!
A note from the John Howard Society of Canada about a recent petition. Please read and sign it! Put an end to inhumane solitary confinement practices that STILL, yes STILL, persist in Canada! Following our Spotlight on Solitary confinement, the JHSC is tabeling a petition before Parliament calling for, among other things: A definition of solitary confinement under the CCRA The ratification of the UNOPCAT... The proper implementation of the Mandela Rules A judicial inquiry into the failures of the SIUs. You can read the full text of the petition here. https://petitions.ourcommons.ca/en/Petition/Details
A big shout out to all my amazing staff/co-workers/work cohort for continuing to keep it together! Erin Hitchens Angela Poirier Christine Elizabeth Robinson Anny Wang Barbara Ann
Office Meeting - caught napping!
Got to appear on Alberta Primetime again - this time with my colleague Derek Anderson! https://alberta.ctvnews.ca/video?clipId=2054216
A very nice note to receive on a Friday: I am Client’s mom. I just wanted to personally send you a THANK YOU for all the hard work you did for Client! I am so happy with the result! I am over the moon with happiness that I haven’t felt for a year. Thank you, thank you, thank you. It’s been tough to be so far away and not able to support her from here the way I could face to face. The result was more than we dared to hope for. You are amazing!... Have a wonderful weekend. I know I will!
Seriously? In Sherwood Park no less... This better get referred to ASIRT (Alberta Serious Incident Response Team) Warning: graphic content.
Welcome to the team, Barbara Dowker! (Pictured on the right) Barbara will be called to the Bar on July 3 after an amazing article at a large prestigious criminal defence firm here in Edmonton. Thanks for doing a great job training her! We are looking forward to her enthusiasm in the office. She is knowledgeable and takes an objective yet compassionate approach to helping her clients. ... Thanks Anny Wang, for making her feel like part of the team!
This is abysmal. The UCP is going to STOP funding VICTIMS OF CRIME. Apparently, witnessing your family member being killed is NOT a severe enough incident for payment of any type of compensation. What is not made clear in this article are all of the people that will suffer dramatically from this removal of access to funds. For example, victims of domestic violence access this fund for money to get away from their abusers safely and set up new, safe residences for themselves and their children. Without this funding, reliance on women's shelters and other social supports will increase exponentially. Will the UCP give proportionate funding to those programs?? Doubtful. PLEASE WRITE TO YOUR MLA TELLING THEM WHAT YOU REALLY THINK ABOUT THIS PROPOSED LAW. As Albertans, we must act to voice our displeasure with the UCP.
Very well said, Mr. Hurley. While I am supportive of the measures and technological changes the Court is attempting to make 'for the long term', delaying re-opening of the Courts when the rest of the province is getting back to business is quickly becoming inexcusable. Part of the delay is blamed on the time and supplies needed to implement safety measures in the courthouse and courtrooms. If the businesses (large and small) can find plexiglass, duct tape and stickers to retrofit their stores by mid-April, why does is take the Court until "maybe June 1" just to retrofit only 2 courtrooms in Edmonton, 6 total across the province?
Inspirational project and an amazing legal mind behind it all. Great work Peter!
My first appearance in court by video conference. Pants optional!

Sometimes a person's only defence is to say "that did not happen; I did not do that"
Announcing our new office location - right next door to the old office! Still in unit 410 at 9707 110 Street but with a slightly different view and better office space. Thanks to everyone who came in on their day off yesterday to help move.
It was a knee-jerk reaction, Danielle Boisvert, an Edmonton lawyer, said in an interview of the ban on peremptory challenges, adding that in a large, complex bill, the ban on peremptory challenges may not have received the close scrutiny it deserved from Parliament.
A very unfortunate situation. Our provincial justice minister continues to show his complete lack of leadership in a democratic society. On this issue he thinks he is improving the system for victims, but his total lack of insight into the potential for Charter violations will end up hurting those very families in the end.
Dear Prospective Juror #69, Since your opinion of me is that I am just as guilty as my client, regardless of charge or evidence, I thought I would share one of the main reasons I chose this profession - keeping people honest! P.s. And since I couldn't do this in court... Pffftt!
