The Isola di Burano in the Venice lagoon is one of the most colourful places in Italy. Burano makes a wonderful day trip from Venice. It used to be a fisherman’s village where houses were painted in bright colours so when the fishermen came home after a long voyage they could see their houses and they knew they were close to home. FOR MEMBERS ONLY: The Dante Club is holding a nomination meeting Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the hall and with COVID precautions in place. Nominations for all executive positions will be accepted. Nominees must be members in good standing and will have 48 hours to withdraw their names if they do not wish to run. The list of nominees will be posted at the Dante Club and sent to members via email. Elections will be held at the Nov. 26 meeting. There will be advanced polls and proxy voting. Pienza, Tuscany, one of many little hilltop towns in Italy, is the city of cacio, which means cheese. The Pecorino of Pienza, made from sheep's milk, can range from a delicate flavour to a decisive one based on how long it’s been aged. Pienza’s streets are full of charming shops selling various types of pecorino that patrons can taste along with other local products like wine, spices and pici (handmade pasta). Today is Mortadella Day! Celebrations take place today in Bologna, Italy. Mortadella is a large Italian deli meat made of finely hashed pork which incorporates at least 15% small cubes of pork fat.
