Rocky Mountain House was established as a fur trading fort in 1799 and belonged to the North West Company, competing directly with the Acton House fort owned by the Hudson’s Bay Company until they merged in 1821 and kept the name of Rocky Mountain House. The Hudson’s Bay company operated a fort here off and on until 1876, rebuilding the fort 3 times. Settlers started to arrive for agriculture and lumber, and then coal was discovered to the west. The first post office was open...ed in 1912 as the railway was being built from Red Deer to Rocky Mountain House and on to Nordegg. It officially became a town in 1939. Rocky Mountain House is located on the shores of the North Saskatchewan River in west central Alberta with a beautiful view of the Rockies. It is about a 2-hour drive from either Edmonton or Calgary and has both the Cowboy Trail and the David Thompson Highway passing through the Town. It is fortunate to have a variety of distinctive stores and restaurants that support the 4 main local industries of Oil & Gas, Agriculture, Forestry and Tourism. A pretty normal day at Abraham Lake with snow blowing off the peaks of Mount Michener. Many visitors are not aware of how gusty Abraham Lake can be. It is quite common for photographers to chase their tripods or hats as they slide across the ice. Those winds can take an air temperature of -10 and drop it to -25, which can really hurt if someone isn’t dressed for it. A windy cold day on Abraham Lake. Many people are waiting for Abraham Lake to freeze so they can see the ice bubbles. There are a few patches of ice, but the warmer temperatures over the past 3 weeks have left most of the lake open with the spectacular glacial blue. Last winter Abraham Lake did not freeze over until we had a couple of weeks of -30 in mid-January. Even without the ice bubbles there are many beautiful views and hikes in the area. Autumn starts to change to winter at Goldeye Lake west of Nordegg. Goldeye Lake has a PRA with 44 unserviced campsites and is the location of the Goldeye Centre that hosts youth camps, weddings, reunions and corporate retreats. Hiking above the clouds on the ridge of Mount Stelfox. This is a long hike/scramble of about 25 kms round trip, with an elevation climb of around 1,300 m. You can contact Girth Hitch Guiding or Via Feratta Canada to learn of other ways to climb Mt. Stelfox. Fat tire biking on the Amerada Trail in the Crimson Lake Provincial Park near Rocky Mountain House. The Amerada Trail is about 10 kms and it goes around Crimson Lake. Beautiful trip in winter or summer. There are multiple trails in the area, plus some camping spots that can be used in all seasons. A snowy shot of a herd of bighorn sheep walking around Abraham Lake west of Nordegg. It is common to see herds of bighorns along the David Thompson Highway between Nordegg and the Banff National Park, especially in the winter as they love to lick the salt off the road. If you are driving in David Thompson Country please be aware that wildlife on the road is common, ranging from sheep to deer to horses. Ram Falls in its winter splendor! These stairs lead down to a viewing platform above the Ram River in the Ram Falls Provincial Park. This somewhat isolated park has a campground with 54 unserviced sites. It is surrounded by many hiking trails, the Ram Falls Airstrip maintained by the Red Deer Flying Club, and there are many OHV trails and fishing spots nearby.
