Artist talk on zoom today! Come hear about Nadège's work and her Dawson project at her Artist Talk at 5 PM via the Zoom link: https://dawsoncollege.zoom.us/j/91760601319 Nadège Grebmeier’s Forget distinguished interdisciplinary practice unfolds via durational, live, live-streamed, and private performances at times resulting in drawings, photographs or installations. In these performances, she models and hybridizes herself to defuse expectations of beauty and explore the effe...cts (and affects) of the concerned gaze on an unfolding identity as it is observed and analyzed by herself and others. Seeking to confront desires and ideals (aesthetic, commercial, sexual, etc.) through an empowered and performative manipulation of her own image, she intrinsically questions the labour of making and becoming; including the ways in which performance (of the self or art-making) can be documented, disseminated or exhibited. Circulating within Montreal’s visual and performing arts communities as an interdisciplinary artist, project coordinator, curator, and cultural worker, Nadège Grebmeier Forget has participated in numerous events, festivals, conferences and residencies in Canada, Europe and the United States. In 2019, she was the first performance artist to receive the City of Montreal’s Prix Pierre-Ayot. She will have solo exhibitions at AXENEO7 in Gatineau (Fall, 2021) and Le Musée d’art de Joliette (Winter, 2022). Born in 1985, the first daughter of a 1950’s California Beauty Queen contender, she lives and works in Tio’tia:ke / Mooniyang / Montreal. Twelfth artist, Kosisochukwu Nnebe Nigerian-born, Ottawa-based artist and curator. A graduate in communications from McGill, Nnebe has worked as a policy analyst for the federal government. As reflected by the slash/slant line in the title, this is a two part installation about positionality and the dynamics racialized people often experience.... . . . Eleventh Artist, Winnie Wu, "Food is a fundamental human need, and an ancient expression of time, place, and culture. Real Canadian Superstore is a series of photographs that documents ethnic food in the supermarket, with prices under $1.50. It was produced in 2017, the year of the 150th Anniversary of confederation, where multiculturalism was often cited as a evidence of Canada’s largesse and altruism as a nation."-- Winnie Wu .... . . Tenth artist, Xiaojing Yan Born in Jiangsu, China, Yan has a degree from the Nanjing Arts Institute and an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. Living in Canada for the past 15 years, her practice explores living in, and between Chinese and Canadian cultures.... In the Shells explores the state of living and travelling between two cultures. My experience of identity is that it is constantly-changingthe self adapts, changes, and grows, remaining aware and protected from the harsh environment. Employing the traditional craft of lantern making, I constructed cocoon forms resembling life in nature. In the process of growth, the transient stage of these evolving forms recalls the beginning of new life, rebirth, and reincarnation. Their lightweight materials define shape, space and volume, but also the tradition where I came from. Simple in their material restraint, yet geometrically complex; pliable in their porous and translucent delicacy, yet possessing tensile, internal strength; drifting yet self-contained, ready to survive and blossom in a new land with old rootsthese are the qualities and nature of my work, and that of many immigrants. It speaks to the fragility and preciousness of our time on Earth. -- Xiaojing Yan . . . In the Shells Installation, Paper and reed Dimensions variable, 2019 . . . Ninth artist, Dallas Karonhiá’nô:ron Canady Binette A two-spirit Kanienkéha’ka artist from Kahnesatake, he is a self-taught digital artist and a 2020 graduate of Dawson.... Some time ago, I listened on YouTube to Lakota storyteller and water protector, Dallas Goldtooth, talking about the Prophecy of the Black Snake. He related a story of a vision that came to an elder a long time ago, in which she saw the world being destroyed as a black snake slithered its way around Turtle Island and began to restrict access to the land and the water. Everywhere the snake went, came destruction. And this was not limited purely to Indigenous folks, it affected those of all creeds and all colors...But then came the matriarchs. From their homelands they came, gathered together, and decided that it was time to do something for the good people of the Earth... Heavily inspired by that prophecy, this piece was created out of support for the Wet’suwet’en land defenders who have been trying to stop the spread of the ‘black snake’ (pipelines) through their lands. This is a fight Indigenous peoples have been waging since First Contact, as colonial powers continue to encroach on our rights and violate treaties made between settlers and traditional Indigenous governments in order to drill and transport crude oil and ‘natural’ gas. Often, these atrocities can make us feel like strangers in the places we have lived in for millennia. Having to reiterate time and time again that we belong here is not only exhausting, but costly. And yet, we persist, we exist, we rise. Because this land is not only our homeit’s quite simply bound to us on a spiritual, emotional, and cultural level. Land is sacred. Water is sacred. We are a part of it as much as it’s a part of us. --Dallas Karonhiá’nô:ron Canady Binette . . . The Prophecy Digital painting, 1500 x 900 pixels 2020 . . . Eighth artist, Lux Habrich The fragments depict a portrait of my mother, holding myself (first-born), with a fading image of her parents upon their immigration to Canada from Guangzhou in 1951, following the repealed Chinese Exclusion Act in 1947. Plant imagery designs are taken directly from my late grandfather’s gravestone. Silhouettes of my maternal kin, cellular patterning and writings from my journaling practice are present throughout. Historically, quilts have been a ...valuable tool for narrative sharing, especially as they possess a closeness to our everyday lives. Channeling the feminized history of needlework, I employed delicate stitching and materials associated with frailty to reimagine our commonly held perceptions of strength and weakness. By embracing softness and transparency, I hoped to celebrate vulnerability as a force of resilience. This work pays homage to feminine sacrifice and unrecognized labour, and emerged out of my need to acknowledge all of the racialized and gendered hardships my ancestors have survived through, honouring their heritage and silent power. -- Lux Habrich . . . Seventh Artist, Ya- Nan Song, This work is a composite of three digital photographs. The subject in the central photo is my hand and a family photo, which is the same size as my actual hand in the print. The other layers are landscape photos. These photos come from different times and geographic locations, and they connect my childhood and present, as well as my journey from China to Canada. They reflect my conviction that our current identities are constructed from countles...s slices of the past, and the force of life is scattered within. -- Ya-Nan Song Song’s collage of his hand holding a family photo is a meditation on navigating new social structures and injustices. . . . Fifth Artist, Pilar Escobar Escobar was born in Medellin, Colombia at the height of violence by drug cartels. ... "Dynamic Tension, is a 14 minute and 26 second video of the practice of an exercise routine to tone the muscles, whereby I remember my father in one of his activities as a youth.... I prepare for a fight, to defend myself against all the violent thoughts that go through my mind. In preparation for battle, my body expresses strength and endurance, but also vulnerability. Similarly, the ambiguity of my gestures during these exercises enables the perception of both the role of the victim and the victimizer. Delicately wrapping one of my hands and my chest in sheep's wool expresses the desire to protect myself and to heal my wounds. However, the bandage of the hand is also preparation for the fight. At first, the fragility of the fiber requires it to be treated with care. Once it begins to be felted, it becomes resistant and can be strongly massaged. A paradox of protection and liberation is presented in the process of construction of this ‘second skin’when shrinking, it becomes an armor that is impossible to carry, and instead of protecting, it hurts." -- Pilar Escobar . . .
