February is Psychology Month. Psychology is rooted in science that seeks to understand our thoughts, feelings and actions. It is a broad field some psychology professionals develop and test theories through research while others work to help individuals, organizations, and communities function better. Still others are both researchers and practitioners. COVID-19 has brought a new set of challenges to the public, and to psychologists as well. This Psychology Month, we will ...shine a spotlight on the Canadian psychologists who are responding to the pandemic in a wide variety of ways. The benefits of practicing gratitude are nearly endless. People who regularly practice gratitude by taking time to notice and reflect upon the things they're thankful for experience more positive emotions, feel more alive, sleep better, express more compassion and kindness, and even have stronger immune systems. The best way to reap the benefits of gratitude is to notice new things you’re grateful for every day. Gratitude journaling works because it slowly changes the way we... perceive situations by adjusting what we focus on. A subluxation takes place when a vertebrae moves out of position and causes an irritation on spinal nerves. These nerves, which protrude from between the bones of the spine, then malfunction and cause interference with the signals that travel them. Vertebral subluxations can stem from physical, chemical, and emotional causes. There are quite a few symptoms that can signal that you’re suffering from subluxation of the spine. Some of these include pain in the back and/or neck, ...headaches, and restricted or limited mobility. If you suspect that you have a subluxated joint, the most recommended solution is to see a chiropractor. Call our clinic today to begin your journey with chiropractic! January is a time for a fresh start and for some this means setting new healthy resolutions! Making exercise an enjoyable part of your everyday life may be easier than you think. These tips can show you how: Ditch the all-or-nothing attitude. A little exercise is better than nothing. In fact, adding just modest amounts of physical activity to your weekly routine can have a profound effect on your mental and emotional health.... Be kind to yourself. Research shows that self-compassion increases the likelihood that you’ll succeed in any given endeavor. So, don’t beat yourself up about your body, your current fitness level, or your supposed lack of willpower. All that will do is demotivate you. Instead, look at your past mistakes and unhealthy choices as opportunities to learn and grow. Check your expectations. You didn’t get out of shape overnight, and you’re not going to instantly transform your body either. Instead of obsessing over results, focus on consistency. While the improvements in mood and energy levels may happen quickly, the physical payoff will come in time. Stress and Your Spine Many of the problems that show up in the spine are the result of our attempts at accommodating stress. Stress is part of everyday living, and the COVID-19 global pandemic is the biggest crisis to happen in our lifetime. Long story shortit’s understandable if you’re feeling extra stressed out these days. The 3 Different Types of Stress... Emotional Stress Fear, grief, anger and other emotions affect our entire body. Frustration, and a sense of powerlessness, both widely held emotions at this time of global uncertainty, are common forms of emotional stress. Chemical Stress Common causes of chemical stress include poor nutrition, sugar, refined carbohydrates, and unhealthy fats. Drugs, preservatives, tobacco, alcohol, pollen and a host of other substances can affect our nervous system, muscle tone and spine. Physical Stress A whiplash injury from a car accident is an obvious source of physical stress. As is a slip and fall, lack of sleep or overdoing it in the garden. Early on, learning to walk, ride a bike and the birth process itself can be sources of physical stress. Chiropractic Care for Childhood Wellness. Parents often ask why or when children should see a chiropractor. It is recommended that children are checked right after birth because the birthing process is somewhat traumatic, stressing the infant's spine and developing nervous system. With regular chiropractic checkups, potential spinal injuries can be identified to help avoid future health complaints. Saturday book recommendation from Dr. Kim: "The Diabetes Code: Prevent and Reverse Type 2 Diabetes Naturally", by Jason Fung. Type 2 diabetes is a highly complex health condition with many possible treatment options. In recent years, very-low-carbohydrate diets that include frequent intermittent fasting have emerged as a way to not only treat type 2 diabetes, but also reverse it. Whether reversing type 2 diabetes is possible is highly contentious among medical professionals a...nd scientists, but there is certainly more acknowledgment that pausing diabetes or putting it in remission is possible. Jason Fung, a Canadian nephrologist, believes unequivocally that, yes, type 2 diabetes can be reversed, and his book, The Diabetes Code: Prevent and Reverse Type 2 Diabetes Naturally, is an instruction manual on just how to do it. The Diabetes Code offers three principles for reversing type 2 diabetes: 1) avoid fructose, 2) avoid refined carbohydrates while increasing natural fats, and 3) eat only unprocessed foods. Intermittent fasting is an extra (fourth) principle. The Diabetes Code is available in paper back and audio book format. #DesLauriersChiropractic #deslaurierschiropractic #DCGInc #dcginc #dcg #WhiteRockHealth #whiterockhealth #whiterock #chiropractic #chiropractor #chiropractors #health #healthcare #painmanagement #patient #patientcare #wellness #familycare #book #books #diet #nutrition #follow

Healthy Late Night Snack Options! We all have those days. You’re about to go to bed, but you just can’t ignore that pang in your stomach. It’s 10pm. What can you eat that will satisfy you until morning, but not wreck your diet or keep you awake? Here are a few healthy late-night snacking options:... Apple with nut butter Dipping apple slices in a tablespoon of a natural nut butter provides a good combination of fiber and healthy fat that will keep you satisfied until breakfast. Handful of almonds The fiber and protein in almonds is filling, and some suggest that the magnesium in almonds may actually help you fall asleep. Eggs A hard-boiled egg is an easy, protein-packed snack to grab late at night. Oats We typically think of oats as a breakfast food, but it’s a great choice at night. The complex carbs will break down slowly and help regulate your blood sugar. Cook up some oats with your favorite milka warm bowl will get you in a cozy, ready-for-bed state. Calcium and magnesium helps in the development and maintenance of bones and teeth. Calcium intake, when combined with sufficient vitamin D, a healthy diet and regular exercise, may reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis. Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body and it is an essential factor in maintaining strong bones and teeth. Daily stress and pollution deplete our calcium levels and most diets do not provide us with adequate calcium. This may be part of t...he reason that one in four women as well as one in eight men over the age of 50 develop osteoporosis, leading to fractures and often permanent disability. SISU Calcium & Magnesium 1:1 is a convenient way to supplement your diet with those essential nutrients and vitamin D to prevent bone loss and improve bone density. Mindfulness has become a popular topic for mental health and well-being. But what does it actually mean and where does it come from? Mindfulness, a form of meditation, has its roots in Buddhism. It is one group of many meditation techniques that originated in Eastern religious or spiritual traditions. Today, it is often practiced to help with stress reduction. Most commonly, mindfulness meditation is used to help modify a person’s response to stress. A growing body of researc...h shows that the practice is effective in reducing stress and improving mood, and may even help to improve cognition in older adults. It has also been shown to improve anxiety, sleep disturbances, stress, and chronic pain. There are a few other reasons why mindfulness meditation is rising in popularity: it involves low physical and emotional risk, it’s easy to implement, it’s not expensive, and it has the potential to empower people to be more actively engaged in their mental health. Many mindfulness exercises involve practicing just thatbeing mindful. It involves focusing on breath, posture, and the space you occupy in the present moment. Often, even just adding a few minutes of meditation to your daily routine can make a big difference in your overall sense of mental well-being. 5 things you should know about concussions. Participating in sports is a great way to stay active and in some sports, a level of physical contact is required. However, this physical contact can sometimes result in injury. Although we hope that you are able to play safely, concussions are a common traumatic brain injury that can occur in high-contact sports. This injury can be serious, and it’s important to know what steps you should take in the event that you suspect that yo...u or someone you know has suffered a concussion. Here are five things you should know about concussions: A concussion may be caused by a direct blow to the head, face, neck, or impact elsewhere on the body that transmits force to the head. There are multiple ways to get a concussion such as from falling, or a car or bike accident. When it comes to physical activity, concussions have a greater risk of occurring in sports that involve body contact, collisions, and/or moving at high speeds. A concussion can be difficult to diagnose because clinical symptoms and signs can change and may evolve over time. The diagnosis of a concussion is based on the assessment of a range of symptoms (i.e., headache, difficulty concentrating, feeling like being in a fog, or emotional lability), signs (i.e., loss of consciousness or balance disturbance), cognitive impairment (i.e., confusion or slowed reaction times) and neurobehavioural changes, such as irritability. Recovery: When properly managed, 8090% of concussions resolve in a short period of about 710 days, although the recovery time frame may be longer in children and adolescents. Often, the most important factor in concussion management is physical and cognitive rest until the symptoms resolve. From there, a step-by-step guideline is followed that slowly increases physical and cognitive exertion before returning to one’s regular active lifestyle. However, emerging evidence has suggested that starting aerobic exercise sooner rather than later after a diagnosed concussion contributes to a faster recovery and return to sport, school and work. What type of mask should I get for my family? Non-medical masks (also called fabric masks or face coverings): If you and your family live in a place where COVID-19 is widespread and don’t have any COVID-19 symptoms, then non-medical masks are recommended. Medical masks: Medical masks are in short supply globally because of the pandemic. They are recommended if you or a family member is at a higher risk of severe illness due to COVID-19 (people over 60 years old or with under...lying health conditions), or if you are caring for someone with COVID-19. A medical mask should be worn to protect others, if you have symptoms of COVID-19. For the protection of our staff and practice members masks are mandatory inside of our clinic. 3 different types of activities recommended by the Physical Activity Guidelines of Canada Do you ever question whether or not your children are meeting the minimum recommended level of activity? It’s easy for children to get distracted by all the technology they have at their fingertips, and sometimes they can too hastily dismiss the idea of playing outdoors with their friends. Guidelines published by the Public Health Agency of Canada outline how much physical activity child...ren should be getting every week, which can be a really helpful guide for you and your family. Children aged 511 should get at least one hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily. It should be vigorous, intense activity that helps build muscle and strengthen bones. Children aged 1217 are also recommended to do an hour every day of moderate to vigorous intensity activity, and vigorous activities at least three days a week. Combining aerobic and strengthening activities will improve their health and well-being. Knowledge is important, but action is what matters. To actually motivate your child, try to lead by example and encourage the entire family to get out and move. Another potential strategy is to enlist your children in organized sports where they can learn new skills, make friends, and have fun. You may even want to introduce them to a sport that you once played as a child or encourage them to choose an activity based on their own interests or natural abilities. They’ll love the idea of trying something new. It is common to have questions and even trepidations before your first visit to any new healthcare provider. Luckily, chiropractors know that new patients may need extra time to discuss their questions or concerns. You can play a role in your own chiropractic care before your first visit. An effective way to be involved in your own healthcare is to learn about what you can expect from visit #1. Duration of visit Depending on the injury or condition for which you are being tre...ated, initial visits can last from 45 to 60 minutes. Subsequent visits will likely be shorter, but the first visit aims to start building the therapeutic relationship, identifying the cause of the problem and discussing a proposed plan of management. As spine, muscle and nervous system experts, chiropractors are extensively trained to assess, diagnose, manage and prevent reoccurrence of musculoskeletal conditions while specifically addressing your needs and goals. Make sure you communicate your needs and goals to your chiropractor. Health history As mentioned, your first appointment includes a comprehensive assessment to help determine the cause of the problem and how to treat it. To do so, expect that the history-taking portion of the visit may include questions about the following areas of your health. Typically, patients can expect a chiropractor to go through a more diagnostic process during the initial visit. However, this may be different from person to person depending on the nature of the injury and personal history. After the appointment After your visit, if you have additional questions or concerns, simply contact the office or write them down to be discussed at a subsequent visit. You may find that as the weather gets colder, you may experience more aches and pains, and even feel like your muscles are stiffer. This is even more evident for workers who work outside in the winter, or individuals with certain ailments. The cold weather can increase the risk of suffering from musculoskeletal injuries and can even increase the intensity of certain musculoskeletal conditions. How Can the Cold Weather Impact Us? If you live with an arthritic condition you mig...ht find that your symptoms may be exacerbated by cold weather conditions, which can keep you away from doing the activities you enjoy. Conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis may not react well to sudden weather or atmospheric changes, which may worsen symptoms . Even without any specific conditions, most of us are very aware of how our bodies feel and move when we are cold we may move slower and walk around when our muscles are tense and stiff. This can result in soreness that we may not experience otherwise. For those who work outside, be conscious of your working conditions. Feeling warm, safe and comfortable is important as heavy lifting and overexertion can increase risk of injury in colder temperatures. Investing time to do activities or sports that you enjoy is key to healthy aging and an active lifestyle. Being physically active is often a good way to prevent and manage musculoskeletal injuries as well as helping maintain strength and mobility. Varying your routine between high- and low-impact activities is a great way to modify your workouts and challenge the body. We’ve outlined some great suggestions for both so you can get up and get moving! Low Impact Low-impact exerc...ise tends to be less jarring on the body and joints, and less intense overall. According to the American Council on Exercise, keeping at least one foot on the ground at all times also reduces your risk of musculoskeletal injury. Some examples include: Working out on an elliptical machine Low-impact aerobics Using a rowing machine Home exercise Walking Dancing Cycling Swimming Nordic walking It’s important to realize that low impact doesn’t mean low intensity (unless purposely designed to be so) because you can still get an intense workout keeping both feet on the ground. Low-impact exercises are great for beginners, people with arthritis or osteoporosis, older adults, individuals who are obese, pregnant women, and people with bone, joint, or connective tissue injuries. Whichever form of physical activity you choose, make sure you do it safely. Talk to your chiropractor if you have any questions. A 45-year-old runner walks into a chiropractic office with pain in her hip. She’s been diagnosed with bursitis and tendinitis and wants to manage her pain. She recently began running longer distances, and due to changes at work, she spends more time sitting. The two factors have exacerbated injuries to the tissues in her hip. This is a textbook example of inflammation the body’s natural way of protecting itself. Chiropractors manage inflammation the same way they manage pai...n by looking for the cause and identifying ways to manage symptoms. Manual chiropractic treatments for inflammation Chiropractors start by looking for swelling, redness, heat, pain, and sometimes loss of function (such as difficulty walking) in these cases. Treatment options they could recommend could include one or more of the following: Spinal manipulation, which can reduce inflammation in the joints of the spine that may cause back pain. If the inflammation comes from an underlying condition such as rheumatoid arthritis or psoriasis, a chiropractor will write a referral to a family doctor, a rheumatologist or other specialist. While chiropractors are trained to recognize the signs and symptoms of these conditions, it is outside their scope of practice to diagnose them. However, once diagnosed, a chiropractor can help manage pain or disability that may result from such inflammatory conditions. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that works as a steroid hormone in the human body. Vitamin D is very important because it regulates the amount of calcium and phosphorus we have in our body, which are two very important minerals we need to maintain healthy and strong bones. The amount of daily Vitamin D you should have depends on a variety of factors including age, race, where you live, the season, sun exposure, clothing, and others. As a supplement, vitamin D3 of 1000-40...00 IU should be enough for most people. However, the amount will vary depending on a variety of factors so please feel free to talk to Dr. Kim Greene-DesLauriers and Dr. Pierre DesLauriers for more information. Here at our clinic, we sell high-quality supplements, including vitamin D3 at 1000 IU per tablet. With back-to-school season in full swing, many parents are concerned about finding the right backpacks. In any given day, children and adolescents carry textbooks, binders, laptops and school lunches and the weight can add up. A CNN investigation carried out in Atlanta, Georgia found that students were carrying up to 25 pounds of weight in their backpacks. This is significant because research suggests that backpacks should be no more than 10% of the wearer’s body weight. If... a 17-year-old student, for example, weighs an average of 130 pounds, their backpack should only weigh 13 pounds. Why does the weight of backpacks matter? While more research is needed, studies show that the incorrect use of school bags may lead to discomfort and changes in posture. It’s important to note that wearing a backpack does not in and of itself lead to back pain. If a backpack has a reasonable amount of weight in it and fits correctly, children are not wearing it long enough for long-term damage to occur, says Michael Holmes, Canada Research Chair in Neuromuscular Mechanics and Ergonomics. Here are some tips for choosing the right backpack: https://www.chiropractic.ca//the-ultimate-guide-to-backpa/ #DesLauriersChiropractic #deslaurierschiropractic #DCGInc #dcginc #dcg #WhiteRockHealth #whiterockhealth #whiterock #chiropractic #chiropractor #chiropractors #health #healthcare #painmanagement #patient #patientcare #wellness #familycare #follow

Common symptoms include popping, a clicking sound or sensation, muscle tenderness, joint tenderness,... and being unable to open your jaw wide. It seems like every day a new article is published highlighting the risks to our health associated with sitting. This can be problematic considering that a large number of Canadians’ work involves countless hours sitting in front of a computer screen. Sitting for extended periods of time may increase pressure on the spinal discs that can lead to pain and discomfort, as well as potential secondary impacts on the entire musculoskeletal (MSK) system. Office workers who spend hou...rs at the computer risk developing pain and stiffness in the cervical spine or in the lumbar region of the back commonly referred to as low back pain (LBP). In fact, work-related MSK disorders are the leading cause of work-related disability and health insurance claims of Canadian workers. Not only is a sedentary work environment more likely to cause MSK conditions the conditions account for one-third of lost work productivity. Chiropractic care for workers Studies show that chiropractic care for work-related MSK conditions not only allows patients to return to work faster than standard medical treatment, but also provides substantial savings in overall healthcare costs while reducing the risk of recurrence.6Chiropractors have the expertise to effectively treat MSK conditions caused by prolonged sitting, as well as other work-related mechanisms of injury. Moreover, part of the management plan will focus on establishing a return-to-work plan with the patient and identify self-management strategies.
