Many wonderful points and tips within - Dina Stander: In most shrouding cultures the shroud is a culminating facet of ritually washing and preparing the bod...y for a journey to the chosen place of disposition, so that the spirit is free to journey as well. Shrouding allows us the time to honor the body of the person who has died and offers the comfort of protecting their body a last time, even as we release them to the disassembling elements of physical transition; time, soil, microbes, water, or fire. We know the shroud is a temporary cocoon, even as we know our loved one has died and that their body is now empty. The action of shrouding creates a chamber for the metamorphosis a body needs to become reduced again to the star stuff (science tells us) that all of creation is made from.

"Those who have the strength and the love to sit with a dying patient in the silence that goes beyond words will know that this moment is neither frightening no...r painful, but a peaceful cessation of the functioning of the body. Watching a peaceful death of a human being reminds us of a falling star; one of a million lights in a vast sky that flares up for a brief moment only to disappear into the endless night forever. But at the time of transition, your guides, your guardian angels, people whom you have loved and who have passed on before you, will be there to help you. We have verified this beyond a shadow of a doubt, and I say this as a scientist. There will always be someone to help you with this transition. A ship exists on the ocean, even if it sails out beyond the limits of our sight. The people in the ship have not vanished; they are simply moving to another shore. It is not the end of the physical body that should worry us. Rather, our concern must be to live while we're alive to release our inner selves from the spiritual death that comes with living behind a facade designed to conform to external definitions of who and what we are. I think that modern medicine has become like a prophet offering a life free of pain. It is nonsense. The only thing I know that truly heals people is unconditional love." ~ Elisabeth Kübler-Ross
