The wind blew in the right direction and made a big drift in the dry cow yard this week. They love playing in the fresh snow! The dry cows are cows that are close to calving. They get a bit of a break from milking leading up to when their next baby is due. In the summer you can see them out on pasture. In the winter they get let out once a day while we clean out their pen and make feed but spend most of their time sleeping in the nice warm barn.

This recent snowfall has us dreaming of warmer weather! Our vegetable seeds have been delivered and we are hoping to tap trees and start making syrup in the next couple weeks! Here’s a fun time-lapse video of Kori and Caitlyn feeding the heifers (heifer = young female cow). Our heifers get fed chopped barley twice a day and lots of hay to pick at in between. The oldest angus-cross heifers closest to the camera get corn also to help them pack on the muscle! The youngest calves, as they are weaned off of milk replacer, are fed a free choice straw and pellet mix that helps their stomachs transition into eating the solid foods. Pretty Kitty and Smokey the cats make an appearance too!

Today we’re kicking off weekly Wednesday recipe shares! If you cook any of our products and want to share your techniques send us a message with a photo and description of your creation and we will share it. To start things off, a quick and easy family favourite with a twist: beer, bacon and cheese SLOPPY JOES! Cook 1 pack of de Boers Market bacon then chop. Brown 2 pounds of de Boers Market ground beef then stir in 1/2 cup ketchup, 1/4 cup tomato paste, 1 tablespoon Worces...tershire sauce, 1 tablespoon dijon mustard, 1/2 cup beef broth and 1 cup of our favourite local beer Caledon Hills Brewing Company Let simmer until thickened. Before serving stir in chopped bacon and 2 cups cubed Canadian cheddar cheese. Serve on fluffy soft buns. We sauteed some mushrooms as an optional topper as well. The whole team is out to try and get as much of the grain corn harvested as possible while the sun is out today. Dad is driving the combine, Tom keeps him going pulling the buggy for extra space and Kori and Jason have a tractor and wagon each to make trips up to the elevator in Beeton and back. But don’t worry, I (Casie) will be back around the farm to get you whatever you need from the freezers. If I am not out front when you get here I have just slipped into the barn to work on some chores so please call me at the number posted on the brown door.

The Albion Bolton Agricultural Society is collecting items for the food drive tomorrow for Caledon community services! Cant make it there tomorrow? We will collect cans today at the farm and deliver them for you! There is a cooler outside the barn door to drop any goods off no contact. Another Wednesday recipe share! This is another one from the crock pot because we have really been loving the ready when we get home meals. This country pork and squash didn’t have the prettiest colours to it but it now rivals my favourite pair, pork and applesauce. The slow cooked squash softened down to make a nice topping for the pork, like apple sauce. 6 boneless pork chops seared in a hot pan go into the crock pot. Top them with 1 large or 2 small acorn squash cut int...o wedges. Mix 2/3 cup brown sugar, 2 table spoons of orange juice and 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce then pour over squash and pork. We left it cook on low for about 8 hours but it would probably cook just as well in a shorter time on high. We do have just a few acorn squash leftover and plenty of pork chops if you would like to try this recipe out! Contact us to place an order or do so through our website. Fresh straw, a heat lamp and snuggle buddy. What are your favourite things when it snows? These twins were born in the warm barn on this cold day. The chickens don’t mind that these squash got a little squashy! The surplus of our fall squash is on its way to the Caledon Exchange (always help others when you can!) and the ones that had gotten a little soft are in the chicken run. And they love it!
