STRETCHING VS STRENGTHENING FOR INJURY REDUCTION A common belief is that stretching is the best way to help reduce injuries. Although stretching has benefits, such as pain relief and improving mobility, stretching is not the most effective way to prevent injuries. Studies suggest that a better way to reduce injuries is to incorporate programs that focus on strength training and proprioception.... Stretches can be a component of your training regimen, but if your goal is injury reduction, you should incorporate a consistent strength program. Stayed tuned for some exercises that will benefit your warm up and exercise program! Physiotherapists are well equipped to discuss factors that may be influencing your pain and dysfunction and can help provide you a structured training program to achieve your goals. DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING Medical imaging such as ultrasounds, X-rays, MRIs and CT scans are often used in the medical field to help identify and rule out serious pathologies such as, fractures, torn ligaments or tendons and lesions. Many other findings, like arthritic changes, osteophytes and disc or meniscal changes, can appear on imaging. However, what is not well known is that some of these findings can appear in both individuals with or without pain and disability. ... Studies show that 85% of adults without any symptoms have arthritic changes present on their knee x-rays. Another study shows that degenerative changes in the low back are present in 90% of individuals between the ages of 50 and 55. This suggests that there is no consistent correlation between degenerative changes identified in imaging and pain or disability. This is important since imaging results can often cause significant concern, fear and worry which can contribute to decreased activity participation, decreased overall function and increased levels of disability. Diagnostic imaging is an extremely valuable tool, especially to rule out serious medical conditions. But, we must remember that pain, and particularly chronic pain, is a complex multi-factorial individual experience that often cannot solely be explained by imaging. Physiotherapists are well equipped to discuss factors that may be influencing your pain and dysfunction, assess your current function and help you build a plan to achieve your goals. See more

TENDON INJURIES AND REHAB Tendon injuries, also known as tendinopathies, are quite common and can be difficult to manage. Tendons are highly organized tissues designed to absorb and release loads, mainly from quick movements. Tendinopathies present due to chronic overloading of these tendons, via tension, friction or compression. The most common types of tendinopathies occur at the rotator cuff, elbow epicondyles, patellar and Achilles tendon.... A misconception with these types of injuries is that the tendon needs complete rest to heel. It is fine to offload the tendon initially to let it settle, but for a tendon to restore function, you need to gradually reload it. This means you need to find the current capacity of the tendon are build a rehab plan that incorporates strengthening to the effected and surrounding tissues. Following this, you need to progress the exercises to feature elements of impact and speed to improve the spring loading of the tendon. These exercises will vary depending on each person’s level of function and goals. Physiotherapists have the knowledge and skills to properly asses the injury and establish an appropriate rehab plan.
