I often get asked, What kind of wood should I burn? I always say, dry wood! That being said, each type of wood has its own characteristics. Generally, softwoods (Pine, spruce, aspen) have a shorter burn time and give off less heat. Denser woods (fir, birch) can burn longer and hotter. Mixing always seems to be beneficial. Poplar, cut green, could be ready to burn in 6 months. Fir may take a few years to become dry enough to use in some appliances.... Do you purchase cord wood, have it delivered, or harvest it yourself? Dead standing trees are the cream of the crop. Try stocking enough in the spring to last thru the next winter. See more

https://youtu.be/jM2WGgRcnm0 Moisture meters can be found at most hardware stores. I like ones with a digital display. If you’re running a wood furnace or catalytic stove, wood should be at 10-15% moisture content.

Chimney sweeps are often the first certified technicians to come across obsolete and dangerous wood burning systems. Do you own a Fisher, or Mountain-Aire? Just because a stove has a CSA label, does NOT mean it’s still suitable for home heating. A prime example below.... 30 to any combustible material!? Single wall flue pipe!!? Asbestos board!!!? If you are still using an antique appliance for home heating, don’t be suprised if I refuse service and recommend upgrade. EPA 2020 standards are now in effect for manufacturers of wood burning appliances in North America.

This flood of calls from new clients wanting immediate service is getting annoying. Doubt this post will help much but let me state this... There are not enough WETT certified tech’s in the area to meet demand during peak season. I will very likely refer you elsewhere if you’re not already an existing customer. I am scheduling into late November for consults and wood burning system servicing only. Installs, repairs and inspections have to wait until the new year. I’m doin...g my best to help as many as possible before winter really hits us. Thanks See more

This year has escalated quickly. My clientele has tripled in the last two years and I’m anticipating a backlog of at least 2 months by September. I’m doing as much as I can to get everyone ready for next winter. If you are not already booked, call me soon. The phone’s ringing nonstop anyway. No new WETT inspections, installs, or upgrades after mid August.

Example of the secondary burn in a modern convection stove. If your wood stove is more than 25 years old, consider upgrading this year. Allowable emissions on new solid fuel burning appliances will be reduced by half. Many wood stoves that meet 2010 epa standards will no longer be availabe in Canada after May of 2020. Watch for sales! Those that already meet or beat this new EPA standard are amazing.

Inspections have been revised for 2019. Here are the new SITE guidelines. Happy new year!

It’s CHIMNEY FIRE season. Monitor your woodburning systems! Is there more than 3/8 creosote buildup? How dirty is the raincap? How much smoke exits the appliance as you’re adding fuel? Are you burning clean? If a chimney fire occurs, throw a 1/2 cup of water in the firebox, close air intakes and don’t hesitate to call 911. Ignition often occurs in concealed areas and noticed too late when there’s a breach. Firefighters have the equipment to pinpoint hotspots. Stay safe. Stay warm. Happy holidays!

I’m overbooked. Currently scheduling into October. Mainly due to Insurance brokers increased demands for inspections. My clients come first. If you haven’t yet had your wood burning system serviced this year, contact me soon. If you’re a first time caller, I may refer you to other local chimney sweeps. ... If you need a Level 1 WETT inspection, I may refer you to local SITE basic inspectors. If you need an install, upgrade, or repair, I may refer you to local certified technicians. If you want me, I’ll do all I can to help. See more

Requests for inspections have increased dramatically. This is likely due to our wildfire season last year and tighter woodburning emissions standards coming in 2020. Here’s the brochure...
