Super Sunday on final day of the Dolphin tourney Congratulations to Katy Germain and her Fusion squad for winning a rubber match in the Women’s title game ve...rsus Original Grandmas as these 2 awesome teams have gone back n’ forth winning titles for the past 3 years now...women’s MVP was Harleen Sidhu who played great all weekend for the champs. Congratulations to Men’s champions G2 & player/ coach/ GM Gabriel G Gibbs on an undefeated run at this years tourney. Super strong squad who beat very good Running Rebels contingent organized by Steve Lee who is now all time tourney iron man having played for 25 consecutive years !!! Men’s MVP was Emerson Murray who was amazing all 3 days and was the guiding force behind G2’s great weekend run...Youth tourney champs were Team Flight, congrats to all the kids who participated on a super fun weekend ...3 point contest winner [ for 7th time overall !! ] was Aman Heran with 20 made shots in one minute Dunk contest winner was crowd pleasing Clay Crellin !!! Thanks to Graham Bath & Hoopstir for sponsoring the DC again this year....there are so many people to thank for helping us all enjoy another fantastic tourney. First and foremost want to thank all the athletes for playing so hard all weekend. You are what we are all about Also want to thank our refs, especially lead officials Fred Gunn & Karn Dhillon who have been our main’s for nearly 3 decades. Big part of what we do & so grateful for your hard work & friendship... Mark Starkey started as a player, then a team organizer and for past several years now has been a huge part of our success with his amazing support of the tourney via the Vancouver Basketball Network. Thanks so much Mark & John Leong for all you do for us Gotta give a big well deserved shout out to the one & only MC Harv Puni , nobody does it better !!! Thanks also to our DJ Kiko Aiken, great music & vibes all weekend...much appreciation to our wonderful hosts & all the staff at the South Arm Community Centre with extra big shout out to Jessy Dhillon for all that he does !! Also cant do any of this without the help of City of Richmond all facialited through the hard work by Gregg W, Ross S & Sammy M....love the fun, family atmosphere at the tourney and really happy that so many fam & friends make Dolphin part of their summer plans every year. We are very much a grassroots type event and still draw really nice sized crowds made up of people who love hoops with not too many degrees of separation between anyone. Always makes for such a chill, fun atmosphere. In the end want to thank everyone who enjoys Dolphin and all the people who support us summer after summer. My personal final thanks goes out to all my friends amazing kids [ and all their friends ] who i have been fortunate to see grow up around Dolphin and now they all help operate & run the tourney. I’m so proud of how great they all are [ so much more so than we were at the same age LOL ] & how much fun they all have tourney weekend hanging out & really making everything happen. Its an army of help & so nice watching them all at Dolphin, seeing the tourney through their eyes now. Thanks so much Sajan, Ameer, Siya, Seth, Nora, Simrit, Rashaun, Ramnique, Arjun, Jeevan and all your many friends including Troy & Vikram who all work so hard on our behalf. Another super Saturday in the books at the Dolphin Classic Great game after great game & after 2 full days of hoops most playoff positions & seedings still a...ll on the line heading into final Sunday morning pool games...amongst the many highlights were both G2 & then Fusion breaking 100 point barriers in back to back contests. Thats relentless high octane O & lights out shooting in the forty plus mins running time type games @ the tourney....overall so much talent on display with players coming from all across BC, other provinces & south of the border to play in the tourney. Appreciate everyone coming locally & from far & wide to play this weekend As organizers we all love doing Dolphin, our way of staying involved in the hoops community as well as working on something together as friends Every summer the tourney is an awesome reunion wrapped around a super fun, competitive hoops tourney....love how supportive all our close friends & family are of Dolphin & amazing seeing bunch of great old friends who we would not likely see otherwise....yesterday caught up with so many wonderful people who dropped by including my former HS teammate Ryan B & his brother Rory B [ both of whom were incredible ballers back in the day & I’m pretty sure are not on FB ] for the first time in maybe decades, we definitely couldn’t remember ?? They were there watching Rory’s son Tyson ball out for the Young Guns [ Dolphin generations !! ] and it was so nice hanging out & shooting the breeze with 2 old friends What goes on all weekend for everyone all over the park...so many Dolphin generations involved from the new young players right thru the current vets down to all the Dolphin alums, family & friends all on hand to hang out & have a good time Championship Sunday up next, with playoffs, dunk & 3 point contests and final games all on tap !!! Opening Thursday night youth pool games & fantastic Friday of elite adult games in the books at Dolphin Kids teams advancing to playoff rounds now and women’...s and mens’ teams have kicked off their pool play with several amazing matchups...in women’s draw Wolfpack upended very talented UFV squad while newcomers Monstars upset defending champs OG’s in a very close game. Few more women’s teams set to join play today with these talented groups. Only first games & as all teams are aware its a long 3 days & anything can transpire by championship Sunday ...great games as well last night in the men’s pools. G2 looks like a powerhouse contender yet again as they held off a very good TRU team. Running Rebels have reloaded looking awesome versus solid NWO. In a much anticipated feature game super talented defending champs XFalcons were overtaken by former champs Athelite. Both these teams always so strong and lots of talent on display between those 2 perennial contenders last night....maybe the game of the evening was Vancity/ Kits versus Young Guns. VCK always include some of the best ballers around while Young Guns definitely the youngest squad in the tourney with roster made up of top notch first & second year college hoopers. Last night VCK built up a 15 point 2nd half lead only to have YG’s storm back to win a nail biter in the end. Incredible game !! Special part of what is happening at Dolphin is the important Pink Whistle campaign run by our wonderful friend & co-lead referee Karn Dhillon. Karn works tirelessly with this charitable campaign throughout the basketball calendar to raise funds and awareness in the fight against cancer.
