Don’t miss out on a night of trivia fun, coming to a screen near you on March 11. RSVP for Quiz Night here: douglascollege.ca/quiznight ABOUT THE COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROJECT ... Last year this Douglas College student-led project won the John Gibbard Memorial Award from the United Nations Association in Canada Vancouver branch. The award is given out annually to a student or group of students committed to creating positive change locally or internationally. The project collects donations of clothing, food and toiletries, as well as funds they use to purchase additional necessities; supplies are then distributed to homeless people in the Downtown Eastside. Being recognized with this award is a reminder to us that what we’re doing is noticed and that it’s important, says Vanessa. It has made me feel really motivated to continue promoting change for the homeless community. Despite COVID-19 and the state that the world is in, it’s still important to try to connect with others and give back where we can, in the safest way possible. This student-led project makes an important impact on many in our community. And now you can help, too! In collaboration with Rotary Club of Coquitlam Sunrise!

It’s quite the process to paint a four-story mural! It took artist Carrielynn Victor, with the help of assistant Deb Silver, a full week to complete the paintin...g at our New West Campus. We captured the progress in this hyperlapse video. Titled Raven Figures, the mural was created to commemorate our 50th anniversary and is located on the south wall of the concourse. #ICYMI, earlier this year we sat down (virtually) with the AVP of Student Affairs, Sarah Dench, to discuss how Douglas College pivoted to a digital learning environment and continued to support instructors and students. While no one could have been prepared for a pandemic, Sarah and her team have been incredibly nimble as they continue to go above and beyond. Read more here: http://ow.ly/py9p50BUT7n

2020 marks 50 years of @DouglasCollege. It also marks one of the most difficult years for our community, especially our students. In honour of the Douglas College students who are persevering through their studies during a challenging time, we are proud to launch the Douglas College Resilience Fund. As the pandemic continues, the many needs of our students are constantly shifting, from securing technology to remain connected with peers and instructors, to custom wellness support, to emergency funds. This fund will help address the critical, ever-shifting needs of these students in short, their GREATEST needs allowing them to continue preparing for their futures and pursuing their dreams. We are adding large-scale Indigenous art pieces to our New Westminster and Coquitlam Campuses in commemoration of our 50th anniversary. Gerry Sheena, a Coast S...alish carver, is carving a traditional welcoming pole for the Coquitlam Campus, and Coast Salish artist Carrielynn Victor is painting a mural at the New Westminster Campus. The estimated 2.5 metre (roughly 8ft) welcoming pole will be carved on-site at the Coquitlam Campus starting the week of Oct. 13 and is expected to be completed by January. The pole will be erected near the Sol Garden by the campus’s main entrance, at the corner of Pinetree Way and Town Centre Blvd. The Coast Salish peoples use poles carved with a welcoming figure often making a gesturing motion as markers to greet guests arriving in their territories. The mural painting begins today at the New Westminster Campus. The mural will extend four stories on the south wall of the concourse and will portray the student journey, highlighting the knowledge students gain and share at Douglas. The mural will take roughly one week to complete. Read the full article here: http://ow.ly/mGPI50BKlYm
