I recently was asked how to floss a toddler’s teeth. Try starting with only the front teeth so that your little one gets used to the feeling of the floss in between their teeth. Once more comfortable, work your way to the back of the mouth giving clear instructions and letting little one know what is happening. The change from ‘baby toothpaste’ to the toddler toothpaste was a big one! The main difference for the kids was the taste! I needed to slowly introduce the ‘new’ toothpaste to the kids as a 100% change resulted in some dissatisfied kids (think lemon face reactions). I started with 1 part toddler and 3 part baby, then 50/50 and then finally made the switch! Toddlers can start using fluoridated toothpaste when they are able to spit. Swallowing fluoridated toothpaste at this ag...e is not recommended. I recommend using a flouride toothpaste when the kids are over 2 and are able to SPIT out the toothpaste. Parents often have a number of questions regarding timing related to dental care for their children so Im sharing my thoughts: When should I start... Q: brushing my childs teeth A: As soon as you can see the first tooth. Before the 1st tooth appears, you could gently massage gums so little one can get used to having items in their mouth ... Q: flossing my childs teeth A: Can start flossing when 4-8 teeth are in the mouth, and the teeth are really close together that you wont be able to brush between them Q: transitioning from baby to toddler toothpaste A: As soon as little one can spit on command and wont swallow the toothpaste Q: use an electric toothbrush A: is an option as soon as you see the first tooth. Be sure to use soft bristles and very light pressure! Q: visiting the dentist A: Can visit the dentist anytime but the earlier the better. Have you seen recent videos of the Toddler Candy Challenge? This challenge puts a bowl of candy in front of a child and the parents tell them to wait for a minute and not eat the candy. Parents leave the room and the kiddos are tested on their will power, patience and obedience. The results are funny but with parents leaving the room it reminded me of some bad habits that my kids have. My kids love to snack and sometimes, theyll chipmunk the snack (store food in their cheek)... because the taste lasts longer. This is not good! Firstly, it can be a choking hazard. Secondly, bacteria will feast on these and create an acid that can cause tooth decay. What I do now is ask the kiddos to open their mouth and show me that its empty before they are able to leave the snack table! I recommend to always make sure your kids have finished the food in their mouths before they run away to play. Im a dad to two toddlers (ages 2 and 3). They love sugar, especially juice! Sugar in juices can be very damaging to the teeth and the growing body. To limit the amount of sugar intake, I dilute juices (usually 1 part juice to 3 parts water). This gives them a little bit of flavour without the extra sugar that can damage their teeth! And it saves on buying so much juice!!
