The Victus is designed for creating precise LASIK flaps and is the only femtosecond laser that provides the surgeon with live swept-source OCT imaging throughout the entire LASIK flap procedure helping them to maintain visualisation and control throughout. We are proud to announce that Dr. Tayfour has most recently been the first surgeon in Canada to utilize this advanced technology. The anatomically curved Patient Interface provides an extremely precise, stable connection between the laser and the eye. This results in accurate 3-Dimensional cutting while preserving the natural shape of the eye. Patients maintain visualisation throughout the procedure and the curved interface provides a more comfortable experience than other flat, applanating interfaces used on older femtosecond lasers.

Can LASIK eliminate the need for reading glasses? Yes and no. The need for reading glasses usually begins between ages 40 to 45, and is caused by a hardening of the natural lens of the eye. This condition is called presbyopia. If you are 40 or older and would like to eliminate glasses for both distance and near there is a technique called monovision. During monovision LASIK, one eye is corrected for distance and the other eye is corrected for near vision. Many people do very well with monovision but it is very important to discuss with your eye doctor and your surgeon to determine if it is right for you.

Question of the day: When I have LASIK surgery what can I expect and will the procedure hurt? Dr. Tayfour and the staff at The Windsor Laser Eye Institute make every effort to keep you comfortable before, during and after your procedure. Most patients report little or no discomfort during their LASIK procedure. On the day of surgery, it is normal to feel nervous or anxious. Anaesthetic drops are used to numb the eye just before surgery begins so you will not feel any discomfort. It is recommended that you go home and rest following your LASIK procedure to avoid feeling any irritation.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) or Clear Lens Lensectomy is essentially the same procedure as a cataract removal. The eye's natural lens (crystalline lens) is removed and replaced with an implant lens called an Intraocular Lens (IOL) thus reducing or eliminating the need for glasses. This procedure is for patients who are not eligible for LASIK because of high degrees of myopia or hyperopia and who are already presbyopic.

Today we would like to review Corneal Collagen Crosslinking. Keratoconus is corneal disease that occurs when the normally round dome-shaped cornea (the clear outer area of your eye) progressively thins, causing a cone-like bulge to develop. Keratoconus is typically diagnosed during adolescence and early adulthood with a variable rate of progression. The bulging or "cone-shaped" protrusion is caused by the normal pressure of the eye pushing out on the thinned and structurally ...weaker areas of the cornea. Since the cornea is responsible for refracting most of the light coming into your eye, an abnormal-shaped cornea can create reduced visual acuity and affect the way you see. This reduced visual acuity can make even simple daily tasks, such as driving, watching television or reading, difficult to perform. These days many of us are working, teaching and learning from home. We are spending more and more time on digital devices than ever. On average Americans spend 444 minutes of screen time (7.4 hours), compared to 317 minutes for Italians and 540 minutes for Indonesians. It’s easy to see that dependence on digital devices is a worldwide problem. For most patients LASIK is the procedure that will provide the best results. But in some cases you may not be a candidate. The severity of your refractive error and the thickness of your cornea may require other procedures in order to obtain the best results. Dr. Tayfour will thoroughly discuss the procedure best suited to meet your individual vision correction needs

How does Custom LASIK work? In Custom Lasik, an aberrometer is used to measure the way light travels through your eye. A aberrometer measures more than 1,200 points through your optical system and creates a customized 3-D map. This map provides information about the unique visual characteristics of your eye which adds an additional level of data about your vision. This data enables Dr. Tayfour to further customize your vision correction. . . This is the final post in our Custom Lasik educational series. Stay tuned for more educational post to help educate you and answer your questions about refractive surgery.
