Through her many years of training and practicing Meditation, Hatha and Yin Yoga, Yoga Nidra, Massage Therapy, Expressive Arts, and a Degree in Anthropology and Indigenous Studies, her aim is to allow you to connect deeply to your true authentic self whilst encouraging you to blossom into your fullest potential. Cher Compton Owner of Dragonfly Maternity Cher has been guiding others on their healing journey through yoga & meditation for over 4 years, with certifications in 200-hr Yoga Teacher Training, 85-hr Prenatal & Postnatal Yoga Training, 30-hr Yin Yoga Training, and 50-hr Kids Yoga Training. As a mother of two boys, she's experienced the highs & lows of parenthood, which is why she brought Dragonfly Maternity to life. Hey everyone! Doing some purging over the holidays? Just a reminder, we’ve partnered with the @calgarydropin to collect warm winter clothing, all winter long. Big or small, you can contribute what you got, and we’ll make sure it gets delivered to those in need. We’ve been having a pretty mild winter so far; however those warm items are still so valuable for those that don’t have the layers to bundle up. Read below for the items most in need right now... ~~~~~~ We can’t fix i...t all in an instant, but we can help. It all starts somewhere, and we really can make a difference. That is why we’re making a targeted effort to shine light on this topic. Through the Winter months, Dragonfly’s shop + studio is a collection drop-off location for these items (listed below), driving to their Donation Centre to do regular donations and keep the running around to a minimum for others :) . However we needed more than 1 income to support our lifestyle. The flexibility of business is what really drew me in the ability to stay at home and raise our children while bringing in some financial stability is a win win for our family. These products are always in need, and often fall off the radar when people think of donating to shelters. . Since the start of the pandemic, we’ve heard a ton about masking, physical distancing and handwashing. I don’t know about you but I havent heard much on supporting the immune system and prevention of illness. I believe in doing all we can to boost our health and not solely relying on masks or distancing. Poor diet, stress, lack of sleep and too little exercise all have an effect and lower the body’s ability to fight infections and viruses. Here are just 7 ways to support your immune system: 1. Balanced Diet Eat a balanced diet to support the health of the immune system and to help lower inflammation. Load up on more nutrient-rich fruits and veggies like broccoli, sweet potato, squash, Lemon and ginger. 2. Vit D Research has shown that having healthy levels of Vit D can protect you against respiratory illness and help keep your immune system healthy. As Canadians, we don’t get enough of that natural Vit D from the sun and should supplement between Oct May. 3. Exercise Regular exercise helps increase blood flow which circulates white blood cells through your body. Engage in workouts like yoga, HIIT, strength or walking. 4. Sleep The immune system needs the time you sleep to repair and regenerate itself. Aim for 7-9 hours. Too little sleep decreases antibodies that help fight infection. 5. Stress management Many are beyond stressed right now + too much stress can use up valuable nutrients needed by the immune system, while increasing cortisol and inflammation. Too much inflammation = weakened immune system. Turn off the news + engage in calming activities to calm the nervous system like meditation, walks, yoga, etc. . Mamas, have a read and learn more to care for yourself as you care for your littles... and even the bigger ones who still give us jump-hugs as preteens, if we’re lucky . Posted @withregram ... @drjessica_chiroyyc P O S T U R E // while holding your littles::: when holding your little ones in your arms be mindful of how much extension or arch you have in your lower back. This can lead to a lot of discomfort in the back, legs and knees. . When we are carrying something (or someone) in our arms we often extend our back, drive our hips forward and lock out the knees. We do this out of habit, as well as to move the weight off our muscles. . . This posture not only places additional stress on the joints of the spine and pelvis, but it also decreases your ability to activate the muscles that help to stabilize your body- your glutes and your core! . . Here are some quick tips to improve your posture when carrying your little ones: . 1. Bend your knees slightly: as soon as you unlock your knees your hips have to come back over your feet in order to not fall forward. . 2. Focus on the rib cage:: align the front ribs over the front hips (called the ASIS). ** this puts the abs in the correct alignment for core activation . 3. Point your feet forwards:: this helps to align the ankles, knees and hips and help the body properly activate the muscles of your legs, hips and core. . 4. Breathe with your tummy:; allow the belly to expand in all directions (3D Breathing). This helps to activate the core + pelvis floor muscles and is SO VERY important for spinal, pelvic and core stability 5. Relax the neck and shoulders: another compensation is to over activate upper part of the trapezius muscle (tops of shoulders). Try to gently reposition the shoulders back (1-2cm) then activate the lower part of the trapezius by gently squeezing the shoulder blades back and down. (*tip: don’t pull hard. Have you been feeling the ‘Covid fatigue’? It’s good to check in with ourselves and others because many are struggling right now. Many of us didn’t think we’d be here by now and it’s almost Christmas. To be honest, I found this past week to be challenging in many ways. Up to this point I’ve been feeling pretty good but til recently things are finally starting to weigh on me and feeling wearisome. Was def in a funk the last few days and just not feeling my usual self. But after doing some things that fill my cup and taking time for me, I’m feeling a bit lighter and more grateful. Making time for self- care especially during these times is so important. Sometimes we just need to pause, rest and do things that fill us up! While life as we know it has changed, we do have a choice in how we respond. We can either allow the stress and uncertainty overwhelm and paralyze us, or we can reframe it as a powerful ‘call to action.’ While so many things are out of our control, focus on WHAT you can control. There are so many practices we can adopt to ensure our health is balanced and to get in a high vibe state. If you’ve been feeling in a low vibe state lately, here are 10 ways that can instantly help raise your vibration: 1. Play an upbeat playlist. Morning friends! I'm Cher, the owner + community builder behind Dragonfly Maternity. If you caught my previous vid, I’ve started this intentional mission of bringing movement in to start my day. Not necessarily anything too crazy or intense; it can be as simple or strenuous as we feel we have time & energy for each morning. Really, its about committing to carving out that space for ourselves, and thus receiving the benefits of what this can offer us. The physical, mental, em...otional benefits that greet us at the start of each day with motion + mindfulness. . I invite you to join me in the month of September... 30 days to set that intention for yourself to stick with the rhythm & routine of movement as you start your day. A long run, a brisk walk, a few rounds of Sun Salutations or your favourite Yoga asana, a swim, a bike ride, a rollerblade... whatever this looks like for you, make it accessible and enjoyable. Dear 2020, this is not what I imagined pregnancy would look like. The isolation and loneliness because covid has restricted so many things. The family and friends who don’t get to be a part of this journey. The lost connections and missed gatherings we really looked forward to as moms-to-be which we aren’t able to have. And so it is..... We try to make the best of it. We do what we can with what we’re able to And it has forced us to adapt and adjust, and let go of our expectations. As an educator and mama-to-be , this has been weighing heavy on my heart for a little while now, and it has been coming up in many convos I’ve had with other expecting mamas. Dragonfly Maternity is humbly honoured to partner with the Calgary Drop-in Centre to start a Winter Clothing Donation Drive in an effort to add a small contribution to the amazing work that they are doing. Did you know in the last 7 months, the Calgary Drop-in Centre has helped find housing for 292 people! And they have a store-type area at their Emergency Shelter through their Free Goods Program, offering gently-used items for free to those in need, from clothing to hygi...ene to basic household items. If you’re interested, you can find more details on their website here: https://calgarydropin.ca/get-involved/ways-to-donate/As the weather starts to shift, those of us that are privileged have warm layers and a cozy home to appreciate. And those that don’t have these basic necessities in our Canadian Winters, yearn to have these things. We can’t fix it all in an instant, but we can help. It all starts somewhere, and we really can make a difference. That is why we wanted to make a targeted effort to shine light on this topic. Through the Winter months, Dragonfly’s shop + studio will be a collection drop-off location for these items (listed below), and we’ll drive to their Donation Centre to do regular donations as things take shape. . Surely we all have a winter coat that the kids have grown out of, an extra pair of mittens, snow pants that still have some life in them, that one toque that we never really wear.. lets pass on those items to others that could really use and appreciate them. . The plan is to initiate this at our space starting immediately, and as long as the Winter conditions last. The focus will be on the following items and we’re happy to transport them to keep the running around to a minimum for others :) however if you have additional household items that you would like to donate directly to them, you’re encouraged to make arrangements with their Donation Centre using the link above. . Posted @withregram . @nourishedfitlife Only 8 weeks left til baby #2 arrives and I gotta say, time is sure flying. Single digits! Staying fit throughout my pregnancy has made a world of a difference in my energy, strength and endurance. For the most part energy has been pretty steady and most days I even forget I’m pregnant lol. Having a fit pregnancy comes with many benefits and it’s not just about doing cardio. While most women prefer light cardio throughout pregnancy, we can’t forget about the importance of resistance training. Resistance training has great benefits like improved posture, better muscle tone and increased strength. This time around it’s been a lot less pain and aches and I’d contribute that to more well rounded program. With any exercise however, you should always listen to your body and focus on doing what you can do with where you’re at. There are def some exercises and positions to be avoided with pregnancy... which I wasn’t even aware of with my first pregnancy. I would agree that it can be intimidating walking into a gym at first as a pregnant women especially when you get the stares. But fortunately in the city there are a variety of judgement - free classes classes out there that are pregnancy- safe and led by qualified instructors. @dragonflymaternity is a great fitness boutique studio for mamas and mamas to be where they offer yoga as well as fusion fitness classes either in person or online. Having a supportive community with other mamas in this stage can make a difference especially during these times. For any mamas (and to be) in the Calgary area looking for that extra support and professional guidance, check out some of the classes to get connected. The more you give out, the more you receive . For the month of October, I invite you to join me for 31 Days of Gratitude . If you’ve joined for any of my past motivational groups, you’ll know that I bring a dynamic range of capacities (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual), as we are dynamic Beings. This particular one is more introspective than some of the others; and with that, it can be as deep or light-hearted as you’d wish. . We’ll be doing a brief journal entry each day of October to shine light on the many things that we can be grateful for in our lives. I’ll also be sharing inspirational quotes + insights along the way. I’ve done this one with groups in the past and it is such a wonderful way to bring in this mindset of gratefulness into daily living . To explain a little more about the intention with this it’s not that we’re ignoring or denying the challenges or negatives in our life (I believe it is still important to learn & grow from the challenges as well), but rather that we’re reminding ourselves of the successes and positives in a way that welcomes these aspects into our lives with more awareness + flow. #ridingthewavesoflife The more we focus our attention on these aspects that we wish to bring in, the more those energies open up for us. And *particularly* when we may feel that all is down and we have nothing to be thankful for is when this mindset shift can be the most profound .
