#trout are getting shallow at this time or the year. Last weekend I took my daughters to get them into a new-to-them species and we each caught 2 fish. Day two of my Lake St. Clair trip. Richard and I had been looking at two contradicting weather apps and we decided to hit the launch by 6:45 am just to see what the day would hold. When we arrived, the waves were breaking against the beach, which meant that the winds were blowing from the N-E (not a good thing).... We decided to venture out but having the thought that it would probably be a short day. Five minutes into our adventure I caught a nice #walleye and after offering it to a couple of #musky fishermen, the #fish swam away unharmed (that fish is lucky I didn't catch it closer to home ) Then my drought began...I struggled to get a bite while Richard was catching fish left, right and center (including a beautiful 21.25" and a 20"). It had to be the color because I was throwing the same rigs as he was (Ned and dropshot) but his bait had a lamination with chartreuse. I guess Richard was feeling the pressure that I wasn't catching fish so he came over and gave me one of the baits that he was using. Shortly after I landed a beautiful, fat and acrobatic 18" smallie that made my heart pound and got me all excited to keep trying to catch more and bigger fish...but the bite slowed down for both Richard and I. We changed spots and switched back to my X Zone Lures and hooked on another walleye and immediately after I caught another #sheephead. Time was ticking and Richard went back to one of the first spots we tried that morning while I stayed trying in the same area where I caught the last two fish. No luck. I decided to go closer to Richard to try that same area. He caught a dinky fish that came unbuttoned. Richard said "I'm catching small fish in a big fish area" and I replied to him that his momma should be around somewhere around. 15 minutes later my #NedZone #nedrig became heavy and my nrand new St. Croix Rods #legendtournamentbass got the most pronounced bend I have ever experienced in a rod. All I had to do was to start reeling and my #xzone #nedhook and 6-pound Seaguar Fluorocarbon #InvizX did all the work to keep that fish pinned allowing me to land a 21-inch beast using my YakAttack #leveragelandingnet. That was it! My personal best smallmouth! @ Windsor, Ontario

Day 1 on Lake Saint Clair. It was a cold and windy morning but still made it for a spectacular sunrise that had to be captured by the lens of my smartphone. It started stupidly slow for me and needless to say, it really stayed slow for me for the rest of the day. I caught a few fish but nothing to brag about.... I caught two 16.5" #smallmouthbass and a few other small ones that I didn't even bother measuring. There was this one smallmouth fish that really broke my heart (and the line for that matter). The thing must've been close to 19". Snapped my line right at the boat after fighting home for close to 2 minutes. It was totally my fault as I was too lazy to cut ans retie a frayed line. That one hurt but #lessonlearned. I did manage to add a new species of personal captures, a 25" #sheephead or #freshwaterdurm that hit and fought like a train, making me believe that I had the world record smallmouth . We stopped fishing at 4pm (after being on the water almost 9 hours) and headed to have diner and beverages. Lots of laughs and stories shared during the day. Team Hobie Fishing Canada was represented by @tim_percy_kayak_fishing, @richard_ofner, @northernkayakangler and #yourstruly. And we also met other #kayak #fishermen on the water: @craig.wright.7528610, Rob Baginski, Gary O'Brian and Daniel also came over to say hi and exchanged some casual talks. PB alert Biggest #walleye I have ever caught from a kayak! I'm sure if I had pinched the tail it would've touched the 24inch mark. This one happened while fishing my last #tournament of the @kaao.ca season on Muskrat Lake in Cobden, ON.... I was throwing a 1/2oz. blade bait SteelShad Lures and it hit like a hammer . I was a bit disappointed to see it was a walleye because I was expecting a #smallmouthbass, but when I saw its size, a BIG smile showed up on my face! The lure caught me a couple or three more smallies and helped me place 7/41 to put me in 4th place AOY in the series. DrB had a good day on Mississippi Lake yesterday. 5th place out of 58 anglers. The bite was slow but I was able to adapt to the circumstances. I am sitting in second place AOY after 3/5 event (best 4 of 5 count). **Gear Talk** Us kayak fishermen are not on a very stable platform when you compare it with that of a motor boat. We also don't have a partner that can net the fish for us. When netting a fish you need one that acts as an extension of your arm.... My choice is the YakAttack Leverage Landing Net with the arm extension. Something about those warm summer nights...

This past Saturday I competed in Black Donald Lake during the second stop of the KAAO - Kayak Anglers Association of the Outaouais series and despite the "cookie-cutter" small size smallmouth bass that live in that lake, I was able to find a few good ones to put me in 4th place overall (51 registered anglers). There was a 3-way tie for first place with 77.25" and my score came next at 77.25". At 1:19pm (40 minutes before the end) I caught a beautiful and acrobatic 17" smallm...outh courtesy of a Booyah spinnerbait I casted with a St. Croix Rods #MojoGlass that has a Lew's Fishing reel spooled with 15lb Seaguar Fluorocarbon #Tatsu line. My heart raced until I got it in the net! (Check out my video on YouTube https://youtu.be/Gj3DCIkErpc). In the end that was my biggest fish and was the second biggest of the event. I started catching legal fish late until I found the pattern and eventually paid off at the end with a surprising 4th place after a 3-way first place split. Adrian has fished out of both Hobie Fishing platforms. The Mirage Drive PA14 360 and the Mirage Drive Outback 180...up until 2 weeks ago, he had never been on a kayak before and he told me that not once did he ever feel unsafe. PS, he caught lots of fish!
