Drummond/North Elmsley Tay Valley Fire Rescue 21.09.2020

Fire Department Update on June 30, 2020: Thanks to the sporadic rain showers over the last few days all open air burning IS PERMITTED in both Drummond/North Elmsley Township and Tay Valley Township. We ask that all residents be careful though as there are some areas in both Townships that are very dry. We have been getting lots of calls for information regarding the use of fireworks. Currently fireworks are not regulated in either Township (there are no by-laws to support/e...nforce the use of fireworks). Here is an information page including tips and best practices when setting off your own fireworks. Please be considerate and notify your neighbours if you plan on setting off fireworks. Residents should expect and plan on seeing and hearing lots of fireworks tomorrow and into the weekend. Please stay safe and have fun. Happy Canada Day! Please LIKE and SHARE to help spread the word!

OPEN AIR BURNING UPDATE: June 24, 2020 Some areas in Drummond/North Elmsley Township and Tay Valley Township are becoming quite dry. If we don't get more rain in the next couple weeks we will be forced to implement a PARTIAL Open Air Burn Ban (Campfires and burn barrels only). We ask that all residents take extreme caution when burning. Make sure you have/obtain a fire permit (and call it in), don't burn in areas with brown dead grass, don't burn when its windy, have a water... source available to extinguish the fire and never leave a fire unattended. If you have any questions or concerns please contact 613-267-2596 or [email protected] Thanks!

Friday, April 17, 2020: BURN BAN STILL IN EFFECT! This picture was taken in Tay Valley Township. As you can see the lawn is starting to green up but the field behind it is still very brown and dormant. The fire ban wont be lifted until all lawns, fields and properties in Drummond/North Elmsley Township and Tay Valley Township have greened up. So unfortunately this means absolutely no burning (not even campfires or chimneas) until further notice. ... We would like to thank all residents for their cooperation. Have a good weekend and stay safe!!

Drummond/North Elmsley Tay Valley Fire Rescue 14.07.2020

UPDATE: Thursday, April 9th, 2020 Drummond/North Elmsley Tay Valley Fire Rescue has been under a County-Wide fire ban since Thursday, April 2nd. This fire ban includes campfires and burn barrels! We would like to thank those who are complying with the fire ban.... Even though today there is snow on the ground and the forecast shows rain all weekend unfortunately we are unable to lift the fire ban. The good news is all this snow and rain will really help to make the grass turn green and once that happens we will lift the fire ban ASAP. We understand it is a difficult time, we further understand that people may see this as an opportune time to burn, but it is absolutely the worst time to burn. The brown, dry, dormant grass dries out very quickly (even after it has just snowed/rained) and creates a dangerous fire accelerant. The Fire Department has the authority to levy fines or costs against property owners who willingly ignore the burn ban and unnecessarily consume the resources of the municipality and put firefighters at risk. Any burning calls we receive requires our volunteer firefighters to respond which can be pulling them away from real emergencies, not to mention the possible exposure to Covid-19. Lets remember that our valuable firefighters then return home and possibly expose their families. Our firefighters are volunteers and will be there for you in the time of need, but if they become ill, they will not be available to help you. We ask for your patience and await updates on when the fire ban will be lifted. Stay safe and have a great long weekend!

REMINDER: Saturday April 4, 2020 TOTAL FIRE BAN! ABSOLUTELY NO BURNING IS PERMITTED. 6 burning complaints in the last hour! The fire danger right now is EXTREMELY HIGH! ... The fire department charges MTO rates of $485 per truck per hour. A minimum of three trucks respond to each call. If you are caught burning during a fire ban you will be charged. Please help protect our first responders and DO NOT BURN. Please SHARE to help spread the word! Thanks!

Drummond/North Elmsley Tay Valley Fire Rescue 18.06.2020

OPEN-AIR BURNING UPDATE: April 1, 2020 Effective Thursday, April 2, 2020 a TOTAL OPEN-AIR BURN BAN will be implmented for Drummond/North Elmsley Township and Tay Valley Township until further notice. Did you know that dormant grass (brown "dead" grass) is highly flammable and grasses respond quickly to changes in moisture? This means that even though it may have rained recently, until the grass greens itself up, it can very quickly lose moisture and be ready to catch fire aga...in. This is why our Fire Chief has made the difficult decision to implement a burn ban at this time and has released the following statement: The ban applies to ALL open-air fires including agricultural burns, brush piles, burn barrels, campfires, chimeneas, cooking fires, consumer fireworks, incinerators and other types of outdoor burning, but does not include outdoor furnaces or cooking appliances with a mechanical shutoff, i.e. propane or natural gas cooking equipment. Due to the concerns surrounding the spread of COVID-19, the need for social distancing and to assist in the health, safety and well-being of our firefighters we placed an open-air burn ban as a precautionary measure to avoid any additional strain on our fire services at this time. We are committed to providing and maintaining emergency response within our communities and we appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we cope with this uncertain and unprecedented situation. PLEASE SHARE TO HELP SPREAD THE WORD! Thank you.
