While I don’t know if these are the right words I cannot stand by in silence. We were incredibly disappointed (and truthfully angered) to hear the news that the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans has made the decision to cancel the renewal of licen...ses for the farms in the Discovery Islands. It was equally disturbing to hear that this seemed to be a cause for celebration. A celebration at a time when the world needs nothing more than stability anywhere it can be found. I have been working alongside these farms as one of many supporting contractors that provide a service to them, for over 3 years and I have come to learn a great deal about this industry. When I first started within this industry, I can admit I knew nothing about fish farming. What I have learnt over the years is that they are not only fish farmers, they are ocean watchmen, they are environmentalists, and they truly care and devote their lives to practicing a type of farming that embraces the need for growing a product that is both environmentally conscience while also providing a route to feeding the population in a sustainable manner. I feel that although Bernadette Jordan feels she put great deal of thought into her decision-making process, she lacked the foresight into seeing how far this impact will extend, especially during a time of such global and economic turmoil. These companies provide jobs for our communities, extending from direct employees, to tradesmen, to water taxi’s, to resorts, to fuel companies, to commercial divers, to barging and tug boat companies, to trucking companies, not to mention the way this Industry has shown support to our local communities with their donations. The impact this decision has made will be felt catastrophically in our communities and it is my hope that with the coming of light she may see her grave error and amend this decision.
