It's World Wetlands Day! Canada's boreal holds approximately 25% of the world’s intact wetlands and supplies clean water by filtering the largest surface area of freshwater on the planet. Let's protect these vital ecosystems while we still can. #WorldWetlandsDay #cleanwater

Wetlands act as a buffer to storm surges, swallowing excess water that would otherwise flood coastal communities and wreak destructive financial damage. They pr...ovide communities with recreation opportunities and a haven for wildlife. In Nanaimo, B.C., Buttertubs Marsh Conservation Area is the perfect example of the value a wetland can have for a community. The marsh not only nourishes nature but also protects the residents from storm surges and acts as a natural water filtration plant. On World Wetlands Day, it’s a good time to remember that investments in nature pay big dividends. Thank you to the City of Nanaimo Local Government and The Nature Trust of British Columbia for making conservation a priority. https://www.ducks.ca//buttertubs-a-community-asset-in-nan/

Conserving wetlands brings us measurably closer to finding solutions to some of the country’s greatest threats, including water pollution, flooding, sea-level rise and biodiversity loss. Today is World Wetlands Day. Read what our CEO Karla Guyn says about Canada’s commitment to wetland conservationand what it means for our ability to address the colliding crises facing our biodiversity, climate and economy.

Unless you live along the coast, you may not be familiar with the king eider. These beautiful sea ducks nest in the far north and winter along the coast of the maritime provinces and states and off the coast of Alaska, where they forage for shellfish. Tim Bowman

A new dawn arose on this conservation project some 20 km northwest of Nanton in MD of Willow Creek. DUC restored 33.93 acres and used a rock chute structure to ...restore the wetland that was previously drained. Come spring, the conserved wetland will contribute to a better quality of life for Albertans by storing carbon and lessen the impact of climate change, filtering soil and water impurities, and providing more wildlife habitat. And that's good for all of us. See more

How cold is too cold for a duck? Every fall we receive questions about ducks that stay, even when temperatures drop and wetlands start freezing over. But it doesn't mean there's cause for concern. Our biologists say that if a duck has naturally-occurring food and water (please don't feed them), it can survive cold temperatures and may not need to hurry south.

Many of us have changed our winter travel plans and will be staying closer to home. But Canada's ducks are on the move, heading toward warmer destinations. A significant percentage of North America’s migratory birds winter in Mexico, which is one reason why habitat conservation needs to happen on a continental scale. From Conservator, the magazine for DUC memberslearn more about which ducks make their winter homes in and around Mexico's mangroves: https://bit.ducks.ca/2Tg7RM4

Our goal for our last fiscal year was to conserve and restore nearly 90,000 habitat acres in Canada. Because of people like you, who joined the effort to help save wetlands, we beat that goal by more than 20 per cent. That's 20 per cent more habitat safeguarded to give us cleaner water, a healthier environment, safer communities and ample wildlife. Learn more: https://bit.ducks.ca/3j7aTga Jeope Wolfe

Conserve: a word we’d add to this year’s World Food Day theme of Grow, Nourish, Sustain. Together. Because by partnering with Canadian farmers, we’re finding mutually-beneficial ways for wetland and grassland habitat to share the land with food production.

Good things happen when communities use conservation solutions to enhance their community. The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen partnered with Ducks U...nlimited Canada and Native Plant Solutions to build a 1.9-hectare wetland to support enhanced wastewater treatment at the Okanagan Falls Treatment Plant. By using a natural ecosystem the wetland offers enhanced support to the community by removing contaminants beyond the capabilities of wastewater treatment plants.
