Day 24: We've missed the last couple of tax tip postings so today we are doubling up! April 30th is the due date for filing and paying your personal taxes. June 15th is the deadline for filling for individuals with a small business but the payment deadline is still April 30th!... One other tip we have is to be sure to file your return on time! Even if you don't think you can pay what you owe right away; it's still a good idea to file on time to avoid any late filing penalties.

Day 19: Today's tax tip is for first time homebuyers! Did you know that there is a $5,000 credit available on your federal taxes if you buy a home for the first time? You qualify as long as both you (and your spouse if applicable) have not owned a home in the last 4 years.

Day 18: Today's tip is for sole proprietors! Did you know if you make more than $3,500 you're not just going to paying taxes on it? You're also paying CPP. Both your share and the employers share - because you are the employer! This can be a bit of a surprise for some people their first time filing with a small business.

Day 15: We've missed posting tax tips the last couple of days so today we will be posting a few different tips on RRSPs: -An RRSP lowers your taxable income by the amount of the contribution. -There is a limit on how much you can contribute to RRSPs. It builds up over time based on your earnings. Your contribution limit can be found on your CRA account or on your last tax return. -Did you know you don't have to be retired to take money out of your RRSP? You can take it out... at any time - you'll just be taxed on it. The rate you are taxed depends on your income. -Exceptions to this would be the Home Buyers Plan or the Lifelong Learning Plan. With these plans you can take money tax free out of your RRSP to put down a down payment on a house/pay for tuition. The only catch is that you must pay it all back into your RRSP based on CRA's repayment schedule or the annual repayment amount will be added on to your taxable income. See more

We were bound for some good news in 2021! Here are some of the new tax changes for this year: Effective January 1, 2021, Islanders will be able to apply for a non-refundable wellness tax credit of $500. The Children's Wellness Tax Credit is for all families with children under the age of 18 for eligible activities related to their children’s well-being. Eligible activities could include sports, arts, cultural camps. Be sure to save any of those receipts to claim! ... The federal and provincial basic personal tax exemptions have also increased for 2021 to $13,808 and $10,500 respectively. ***Note: All these changes come into effect for 2021 so they will be applicable on NEXT year's tax returns.

When a movie is filmed on location it means jobs for local residents on the creative side with actors and writers; on the technical side with set designers, c...ostume makers, lighting and technicians - and also for others, from carpenters to accountants. Island accountant Emma Fugate says PEI's new culture strategy will be a much-needed shot in the arm for the film industry.
