TIP #5: POND MAINTENANCE One of our most asked questions is how do to properly maintain a pond. Take a look at these three tips below to get started on your journey towards a clean and healthy pond. 1. The Right Pump for Your Pond : Having the proper pump for your water feature is critical to having a healthy pond, so be sure to select the right one! You want to circulate your pond's water at least once an hour. If your pond contains 1000 gallons of water you need to make... sure that the pump you select will push a minimum of 1000 gallons per hour. 2. A Balance of Filtration: To properly filter water, pair a good biological filtration system with a mechanical filter (such as a skimmer) to remove solids before it enters the pond. By adding a skimmer, things like leaves and algae will be swept from the surface of the pond and disposed into the skimmer basket. 3. Clean Debris from Your Pond Before It Decays: Things like leaves and debris, combined with fish waste and leftover fish food can cause ammonia levels to spike in your pond which can add stress on your fish. Be sure to remove any debris from your pond before it decays!
